Default Barbarians (especially Gallic and Germanic) look better than Hellenistic (especially Athenians, Pontians, Ptolemaics)

I see many screens. There are 1 (and half) month to release of Rome 2.

I see that barbarian factions have more different and various looking units then Hellenistic factions.

    In latest screen (arrows):

    - Gallic warriors have more variety of clothes (brown, red, orange, green, dark red)
    - Pontians have poor colors: yellow, purple and grey

    - Gallic shields are various - symbols and colors like in exclusive content of Jack Lusted and Arverni preview screen (shields colors - green, yellow, blue, white, red, brown)
    - Pontian shields are only two colors - yellow and purple.

The same example is in Athenian preview (2 colors of tunics - brown and blue and 2 colors shields - white and blue) and battle of Nile (screens and video). These are new too (June 2013), but screen of arrows is the newest (16 July 2013). So I am afraid there is no time to change it. Germans (February-March 2013) are more variety than Greeks. Germans in battle Teutoburg Forrest have various helmets, hair, beards, clothes etc.

There are many sources that in game Gauls and Germans look better than Hellenistic.

There are 3 colours for each faction for clothing, no more no less. Shield patterns can give extra colours but that is true for all factions.

The colours seen are the colours of the factions, the Arverni are Green, brown and red and Pontus is yellow, black and purple.

All units have a lot of detail put into them.

    BOOOOOOO
Seriously though they do look good apart from the "players are so dumb they cannot recognise their own units unless they have colour themes" mentality.
If we could get over that we would be in an amazing position to actually have faction variation and realism.

The whole reason I don't like civil war games is because of the bland blue vs grey (I know their are excepptions) deal.

Alas I fear we will have to wait for the modders.

I guess three is a significant advance though. WAIT WHAT: did we not have colour variation in napoleon and empire vanilla? Where unit uniforms for say the british would be blue or red or whatever the actual unit colours really were?

Sail your ship as part of a fleet. Devs previously worked on: Darthmod, World of Warplanes, World of Tanks, RaceRoom, IL2-Sturmovik, Metro, STALKER and many other great games..

Thank you for answer. But I am sure that Gallic shields are the most varius (not only pattern, but colors). I see in Arverni preview and your exclusive content these colors of shields:
    - green
    - brown
    - red-white
    - red-yellow
    - yellow
    - blue-yellow
but I see only two colors of Hellenistic factins, Athenians:
    - white
    - blue
    Pontians:
    - yellow
    - purple

I have sceond question: Which colors have Macedonians. We know black, but how abou other 2? pruple? blue? red? Please answer.

No the Celtic shields have 3 colours: green, red and brown. Shield patterns have a few extra colours.

Athenian shields are white, blue and gold/oranje. Macedonian are black, gold/oranje and red. Shield patterns for Greeks tend to be white, black or bronze in colour.

3 colours for every faction with sometimes a few more from shield patterns. No more, no less and does not change from faction to faction.

This sounds better then the original shield Athenian color scheme (white, black, and blue).

Will black still be used on the Athenian shields for trimming?

Thanks Jack, looks like things are starting to shape up!

Number of shield patterns varies. Germans have 6. Celts have 16, Britons 18, Carthage 8, Greeks 18+ depending on unit, Romans generally have specific shield patterns for specific unit types.

I thought about Macedonians clothes in second question. It wasn't my precision, I am sorry.

How colors will have Macedonian tunics? In screen are black, but I hope will be red, purple or blue.

And what about Romans? In screens all Romans are red tunics. Legionaries don't have 3 colors of clothes, I am sure.
For Imperial legionaries red color is good, but I think that Polybian Republican Romans should have various colors.

I answered your question on Macedonian colours.

Roman tunics will be red but with a couple of variations in shade, pre-Marian units will have some shields in yellow.

I understand why this is done and all... but I hope one day you guys will move on from colour coding factions and make it more realistic.

Jack you answered about shields, but my questions was about tunics:

The 3 colours are applied to all parts of a unit. No different colours for shields or tunics. They use the same 3.

Has any effort been put in to making units of a similar type but from a different culture fight differently because so far I don’t see much of a difference.

The models are what you see of a unit, the helmets, armour, shields, tunics etc. I hope you can see that there is a great diversity of those and that Romans absolutely do not look the same as Celts and so on.

A lot of units do share the same animation sets. Code mechanics are used more to differentiate between how different units fight.
