    Default Classic Rock Suggestions

I used to listen to pretty much just rap. Awhile ago I got turned onto Led Zeppelin. I went on to download all of their albums and love every song from the front to back of all of them (except In Through the Outdoor, the only songs on it I can stand are Fool In the Rain and All My Love). Then I started exploring for more bands similar to them. Some of the bands I have grown to love now beside Zeppelin are Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jimmi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jethro Tull, and Aerosmith. I am still looking to expand my collection. Can anyone suggest any bands that they would think I would like based on the above?

    The Guess Who
    The Turtles
    Electric Light Orchestra
    David Bowie
    Jefferson Airplane
    The Yardbirds
    Van Halen
    Eagles
    Traffic
    The Police
    Frank Zappa
    Bob Dylan
    Yes
    King Crimson
    Simon and Garfunkel

If you want we can give you a bunch of songs we consider the best and more representative so it helps you sort what may attract you. However I would suggest trying downloading from these bands, you will usually be able to find their most popular songs easily, which can be a good start.

I see Eric Clapton, so I'll go ahead and suggest Cream for that. Based on those selections, you might find one of the Beatle's psychadelic albums to your liking, as they incorporate rock and the "rebellious" (For lack of a better word describing their shift) attitude of '67 into their music of that time. I'd suggest Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, (Actually, the only parts that had the rock 'n' roll to them were the first two songs and the last three, though the rest are excellent experimental songs) Revolver, or even the White Album, which was already in '68 when they yet again changed their image. Lastly, Queen should be a solid choice, as they have many great songs that you can find on either the Classic Queen or Greatest Hits compliations. Sorry to those who know the best of their real albums. If you want any others that I like, I'll say Boston, The Clash, or The Eagles.

P.S. I am aware that your taste in music is slightly different than mine, as you like more of the "heavier" artists than the ones I suggested, but don't let that hinder you from exploring new/similar bands.

You should definitely check out CCR, Queen, The Doors, Black Sabbath, David Bowie (as already mentioned),
and maybe you'll even like Dire Straits.

There are many great music threads on this forum, and it seems like many users like rock, so if you do a little reading you might find some bands we forget to mention, or maybe some bands that are beyond classical rock... like Blondie

Heh, Rush. Let him get a little more used to mainstream Heavy Rock/Metal/Classic Rock music before giving him those bands.

Talking about Rush... we forgot the band! Rush (the band) is awesome, start with Tow Sawyer, their "gateway" song. Then there's 2112, and you got pretty much two different sounds by them (old and later).

    Rush - Tom Sawyer

Yardbirds - Heart Full of Soul (guitarist is Led Zep's Jimmy Page)

    The Police - Roxanne

Deep Purple - Child in Time

The Doors - Not to Touch the Earth

The Turtles - So Happy Together (that must be one of the song that has been covered the most by other bands...)

Electric Light orchestra - Mr. Blue Sky

The Guess Who - American Woman

The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again (unfortunately without the very awesome Keith Moon (R.I.P) on drums, he passed out right before the awesome drum fill at around 7:30 live on stage...)

David Bowie - Rebel Rebel (don't be frightened by his ugliness, his music his really good...)

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King (I suggest you also check the songs Starless, the Night Watch, Lark's Tongue in Aspic pt.1, 21st Century Schizoid Man, Indiscipline and Fracture)

And I forgot another band: Renaissance. If you can get your hands on the song The Vulture Fly High, listen to it.

And now for something totally different

The Tubes doing White Punks On Dope

Too bad it only gives the first half of the song.

And also very cool but strange

Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Vambo

I got into both these groups from my favorite bar band of 30 years ago.

    No mention yet of Santana

    Santana - Soul Sacrifice

The drummer , rythm guitarist and keyboard player went on to form a fusion group called Journey. They later picked up Steve Perry and became the Journey most of you know.

The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again (unfortunately without the very awesome Keith Moon (R.I.P) on drums, he passed out right before the awesome drum fill at around 7:30 live on stage...)
The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again with Keith Moon

Complete with huge Moon solo and guitar smashing ending.

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
Love that song. Thats the first time Ive ever seen it performed. Just incredible. Thanks.

    Linda Ronstadt "Desperado" early video

first of all, it's Jimi Henrix, just so you know, some people can get pretty touchi about that...

Anyway, if you life Zepp, you'll probably like Cream, a similar blues-rock sound, they only have three albums, so they should be easy to get into.

Deep Purple are also great, try Machine head and Deep Purple in rock (or is it at rock?...) some of their early stuff is great, but a little less accesible, so if you'd like you can try their self titled album to.

While I don't love them too much, AC DC are a good band, and lots of other people love them.

If your feeling daring try King Crimson, try their albums Red and Hall of the crimson king.

If you like slightly folk-ier stuff, try Jefferson airplane, the albums Volunteers and Surrealistic Pillow.

The yardbirds are also great, try the album Roger the Engineer.

Jethro Tull are also great, try Aqualung and Thick as a Brick.

I think that's overwhelming enough already, there are many many more but this is plenty to start with.
