    Default Smoke

Excellent job on the mod guys, but I have one major issue: smoke.

The smoke is very unsatisfying to me and doesn't not give the sense of a black powder battlefield. Heck, i would be satisfied if you just kept smoke as it is but had it stick around for several more seconds.

It's just that for me this one factor plays a huge role in my immersion in battlefields of this time period.

Who else would like to see this implemented as much as I do?

From what I remember, they wanted more smoke but it caused a lot of lag as you moved the camera so it had to be taken out.

That's a shame. I hope there can be some kind of a resolution.

Maybe we release the nice lingering smoke effect we have, as an install option, you will suffer from huge framedrops, but it will not cause any sync problems in MP games.

Personally I loved them, I have an high end computer but the framedrops were indeed quite huge, so I think it was wise to change them before a public release.

We will discuss it for sure.

It would be useful to have some sort of separate addon so you can add more smoke to the battles. I was thinking of working on a short battle movie using NTW2, and lingering smoke is great for cinematics.
Of course, for multiplayer the smoke effects aren't nearly as important. Battles aren't fun when they're too laggy to fight.

How large exactly were these framedrops? It's client side right, so if you were playing against someone with a less beefy rig they could turn the lingering effects off?

Also, why in the trailers for the game is there no lag with smoke and the men use the correct animations but in game this is not the case?

I was trying to implement new smoke by adding new effects. I got a cool smoke effect but I have a problem: the smoke follows the bullets' trajetory. Don't know how to fix it. I made a new effect in descr_effects_firearms.txt and I imported pre-existing models in RTW. For example:

Edited and removed the code (please this can cause problems, do not edit code and post in public, others will probably get in problems and we have to fix it again)

I added this effect to the NTW effect.

the problem is related to how smoke effects are created, but not terminated when they are NOT visible on the screen. So if you have a large battle raging across the map (MP) and you only focus on one part of it, you'll start to suffer from a framedrop. Once you turn the camera to the other fights you will suddenly see massive clouds rising all across the battlefield and once they have thinned out framerate will restabilise. If you know about the problem you can avoid it by regulary looking ariund the battlefield to "clear up the smoke effects", but we didn't want to include this in the standard mod and get tons of complaints about slow framerate.

the lingering smoke effect will probably be included as an option in the next update - but use at your own risk.

I explained somewhere in debt here on this forum why animations cannot be perfectly altered and used in game, to lazy to look for it now.

But to answer your Q, in the trailer you see the animation how we can make it and should look like if we had the proper tool provided by CA, in the game you see the animation how it can only function now in the game without bugs.

I'll be interested in trying out the smoke effects!

As one person said, I largely would like them for video-making purposes.

Only Rifles have them so you can see how they are, is just a bug now, we rushed to make sure you all had the British, will be fixed in the next release.
