Default MTW Problems - Please Help

I have bought Medieval Total War + Viking Invasion Expansion. I have an Athlon XP at 1.7 Ghz, GeForce FX5200 with 128 MB Ram, Win XP SP2, AC`97 Sound Chip (VIA), the latest NVidia Drivers, latest DirectX, and latest Sound Drivers.
I tried everything, antialising set to every possible setting, sound acceleration and hardware mixing disabled, compatiblity setting enabled, latest patch ... it does not work at all. It behaves randomly, when it decides to load (probably based on the moon being in the right quadrant) and after some laggy performance, when it comes to load the campaign map, there, it always crashes. Can anyone help me or should I return the game back? I mean, honestly, they say Win XP is supported ... but it's not!

Ok, I managed to get it working with an older driver, and NO antialiasing at all, Win98 Compatibility Mode and no Sound Acceleratino. It works well, no crashes, except that after my first battle, when returning to the campaign map, it crashes ... again! Well, at least this time it works fine.

But why does it still crash?

Did you get the gold edition? There is a special patch for it.

It shouldn't be the graphics card causing problems. When MTW first came out I had that exact same card and it worked fine. I honestly can not think of any other advice

Get the 61.77 drivers and try switching between off/2x/4x on anti-aliasing.
Also try switching resolutions, the best is to stay in the resolution of your dekstop.

Yes, RTW works on my system, although choppy. The battles play well, but the campaign map moves slowly, probably due to the FX5200 and only 512 RAM I guess. I really dont want to switch drivers, that will affect most of my gameplay and im not playing all the time MTW.

The campaign map is laggy for me also, the only thing we have in common is winxp sp2 and the ac97 card.

Yes, obviously. The game works fine, the Campaign Map works fine, but imediatly as I enter a battle and return to the map after finishing the battle it crashes. The same happends if I want to save my game and then return to the map. It crashes as it tries to display the map.

Try it with enabling Anti aliasing on your graphics card.

Think you will have to go with your drivers way back
