    Default Ribaults (wow!)

Never before have I had a single unit, of anything, get over 600 kills in one battle.

Do you have any similar stories re Ribaults (or other seige equipment) completely annihilating an enemy army single-handedly?

Here's a summary of mine: (PIC a few posts down)

    fighting as english
    against norway
late late game, h/h (all enemy units are highly armored heavies)
standing on enemy bridge outside hamburg citadel
enemy comes to attack with two stacks of heavy inf/cav\

just before the battle i recruited a couple swiss pikemen, to spare my heavy swordsmen from combat, as i wanted them fresh to take Hamburg proper (it was well defended)

so thats the context, here's how the battle went down.

    - found my archer stakes didnt work so well at that bridge.
    - made a funnel (two parallel lines of inf to "extend" the bridge.) with my army; swiss pikes closest to the bridge, then some halberds and swords to extend the funnel and narrow it slightly (bring the sides together).
    - stakes placed half way down the funnel, at the end of the pike lines.
    - right at the end of the funnel, i placed a unit of Ribault. the infantry lines were almost touching on either side of the unit.
    - just behind them i had a unit of archers and another infantry

    the battle commenced

the rest of my archers engaged on fire at will, with the sherwoods using fire, i saved them for later.
when the enemy stack was half way across the bridge, i commanded the Ribault to fire at an enemy unit a few back from the front.

    carnage ensued.

the pikemen got to do a bit of fighting, but really that battle was all about the Ribault.

I had a second unit of ribault right behind it for when the first one depleted ammo, it would run off to the side and let the second one come up and begin fire.

    ....

    my thoughts:

it felt like cheating, since the ribaults can impale many men with each bullet.

is the fire rate of the ribaults too fast?

Hardly cheating. Gunpowder revolutionized warfare in a way that would not be matched until the machine gun appeared (IMO...I could be wrong).

Though I do kind of sympathize...I saw what Cossack musketeers can do if they're not countered when I first used them (actually the first time I'd ever used gunpowder infantry in game). I had blown two holes into a city's walls and the enemy army was sitting behind them, so I sent a unit of CM forward to harass them and try draw them out. To my amazement, this single unit killed TWO entire general's units and depleted pretty much every other unit the enemy had before they finally retreated to the square. And the musketeers weren't even close to running out of ammo. It was rather unnerving watching each volley fell several men at once, even with the odd angle of fire due to the wall gaps and unit positions.

    Did it before.
Had greater massacres (1000+) but was too lazy to take a screenshot.

    Awesome.

I just have a feeling that the number of enemies a single Ribault rocket can impale is a little ... enthusiastic.

Highly armored horse/infantry, and each rocket was penetrating about 5-10.

It feels like the reload time for it in SS6.3 has been cut down, so maybe dampening the number of (armored) enemies it can penetrate would make it a little more realistic.

nice screenshots, looks like baltic spearmen taking a beating up front in the engine room.

How do I post screenshots? I hit the PrtScn button, but alas i know not where the file disappears to.

One thing I have noticed is the Ribault no longer has a "loading the tubes" animation. In vanilla IIRC there was a loading animation, as there still is on the Monster Ribault.

Was this modified to buff it?

I appreciate (in SS 6.3) how it--rightly--comes into battles loaded and ready to rock, making it good for ambushes and other rapid deployment roles.

But IMO the non-existent reload time has turned it into ... well ... pretty much, a machine gun.

I cant imagine losing a seige/bridge defense ever again if I have a couple units of ribault on hand.

Go ingame, press PrtScn and go to .../Medieval2/tgas, thats where all the images are stored in .tga format, you can also manipulate their size and make them huge by adding a line in a file(wont go in depth here). You need to convert them from tga to a more common format though.
