Default A fresh perspective on Roma Surrectum 2.5

    Greetings all,

I first came to the RS2 forums with a great deal of skepiscim, looking for a mod that enhances the vanilla experience without gutting it at the same time. Sadly, I was very disappointed with the speed of the battles, as they were far too slow. The expensive and also confusing construction options in settlements further soured my entertainment. Not to mention the annoying pop up about elections every turn or two. Overall, it left a very sour taste in my mouth and I ended up uninstalling it.

However, after getting frustrated that there was basically no "vanilla enhanced" mod for Rome, I dropped the game entirely from my daily roster and contented myself to wait for Rome 2.

It wasn't long before I, once again, craved some Roman action and I reinstalled Rome Gold on Steam and started sifting through each and every of the Roman hosted modifications here at TWC. My attention once again was drawn to RS2 based on sheer popularity. Every time I came to the forums, it had the most people viewing it. Surely there had to be something to this mod. So I reinstalled it again.

Well, hot damn, my viewpoint took a three sixty. I don't know what was wrong with me before, but now the battles feel EPIC in nature. Every battle feels more alive then any of my vanilla battles, it really feels like it matters. Not just another stack of troops set up for me to slaughter. The best I can figure was that I had burned out on Rome in my previous attempt to enjoy RS2. Now, I'm loving it. Granted, I'm the world's worst general as I tend to just send everything in a frontal assault but I do manage to play the occasional battle, the rest of the time I just auto resolve. Sadly, the auto resolve does a far better job then I do with many fewer casualties but I'm learning. The strategic aspect is more my thing, and I do remain confused on what structures do exactly half the time but I manage to do well enough.

In short? I have officially been converted from vanilla Rome to RS2. I will never play a vanilla game again, save for nostalgic purposes. This is by far THE best mod for Rome: Total War, bar none. I dare say, this is one of the finest mods I've encountered in my 24 years of gaming. I do not say that lightly, I am disabled, so I have the luxury of having most of my time to myself, so I fill it up by gaming about 10-12 hours a day, every day with few exceptions. Name a game, and I have most likely played it. So I think I can safely say I'm an expert gamer, if not in skill, then in experience.

Congratulations to all the Roma Surrectum Team! Well done, lads! I eagerly await the next version!

And to everyone else, good job, you've made it to the bottom of my wall of text slash rant slash blog.

    Hi.

I can't stand to play any other form of Total War, I'm afraid. The RS combat system is in a class apart.

I have zero interest in Rome 2, especially as RS 2.6 will clearly be vastly superior in every way that matters to me.

I just find the depth amazing. I'm really enjoying my playthrough as the Romans. It's a bit confusing with all the tax and happiness penalties from all the various structures, but I think I'm getting the hang of it.

I'm still very much looking forward to Rome 2, just because it looks a bit better and I like the new approach CA is taking. I'm not near as nuts as the guys in the Rome 2 forum though, picking it apart and analyzing everything to death.

I (and the rest of the team) appreciate that you gave it another shot.
I really should try to get some time to write a big tutorial thingy, but alas my time is very limited (and also I'm kinda bad at the game myself. )

I may do something like that myself once 2.6 comes out. Try to help keep you modders modding.

That really incredible part, is the fact that the game plays wonderfully even if you don't do the tactical battles. It plays very much like the Europa Universalis Rome Edition actually but you get the bonus of actually fighting the really epic battles when you want to and auto resolving when you don't and unlike most of the TW series, Rome does a good job of autocalcing them. I've pulled off a few heroic victories in fact.

I eagerly await either RS 2.6 or Rome 2, whichever comes first. I am curious though, is there any plans to port RS over to Rome 2 if they provide adequate mod tools upon release?

Here's a screenshot of a perfect example of the AI borking up my plans. By some cruel act of God, I ended up controlling the reinforcing single, lone latin medium cavalry instead of my full stack of legionaries. Alone and completely surrounded, they decimated the poor unit of legionaires shown in the pic. I won the battle anyway, but it was a terrible example of how slack the AI is when it's controlling your armies. I'm going to pay twice as much attention as to what I want to control next time.

And yeah, I don't think victory is most certain at this point.
