    Hey there,

The FPS issue is caused by CPU bottleneck. Your 3570K is an excellent gaming CPU, but CA only programs their games to run on 2 cores. If you check your CPU usage during a 4v4 battle, I guarantee that one core will be at 100%. Overall CPU usage may only be 30-40%, but one core will be maxed, and that's the bottleneck. And I find that siege battles are much worse as well.

Put another way, there is no CPU on the planet that will run a 4v4 battle smoothly. The more units on screen, the more the CPU is bogged down. If you want to improve this, I suggest lowering shadows to OFF and unit detain no higher than medium. Those settings seem to bog down the CPU more than anything else.

    Also, how's your FPS in a full 1v1 battle? I assume good? I get between 50-120fps in a big 1v1 battle, I haven't tried a 4v4. Specs:

    i5 4670k at 4.2
    2x GTX680 Windforce in SLI
    16gb 1600
    2x 256gb Samsung 840 Pros
    Windows 7 Pro

I'm having a similar problem, though here it's on the campaign map. The map was buttery smooth before the recent 'optimisation' update and a graphics driver update (to 13.4 from 13.1), but now it's rather laggy even on medium graphics settings. Though still playable, it's something I want fixed. I've tried rolling back the drivers to the previous version, but to no avail. I have also tried verifying the game cache and reinstalling the game. I reckon it's something to do with patch, as I notice I have 100% usage of one core and none from any of the others.

Running a 7950 and i5 2500K, both stock. Dxdiag attached.

Did you delete both Shogun2 folders before reinstalling?

Odds are that is the problem. CA's updaters never ever touch the one in The Creative Assembly folder.

    Unfortunately not. Just validating now.

-- Edit. I've just disabled shadows and turned a few settings down, and it's pretty much fine. Not completely smooth, but much better.

Ya that's the problem with TW game. You can never smoothly run it a max setting because of its CPU bottleneck.
Nothing we can do unless CA decide to spend more time optimizing for more than 2 cpu. lol.
Graphically, I think most user here can run it at high setting.

Sadly cpu-wise I don't even think ROME 2 total war will be far off with shogun 2.

    Just a hint though.
I find that in most game, shadow and particle has some cpu load. Turn those lower if u want to allocate for cpu power for a larger battle/smoother game.

The most CPU intensive settings are (beside unit sizes) shadows and especially unit details (things that should be GPU intensive in a "normal" engine).
Disclaimer: the post above is way way prealpha, the final version will be way better than this.

PRecious posts here, helping me to understand (if I'm in the right way..) some frustrating issues occurring yesterday whan I've upgraded the. No lags with gigabyte 7970 (I've not tried online battles just single pl. siege and landbattles)but directly a ctd during the battle. Simply the game shut down..a rare event with my past 6850. What's changed?as read in your latest posts I've maxed a lot the specs: shaders 4.0->5.0 SSAO on (but problem appears also with SSAO off) and nothing more changed. I've tried a full stack battle in a not big but full of structures ted-map city yesterday night, lowering shadows (low set) ultra particles, unit details on ultra and 10.000 men on the field. shader 5.0 too. Everything was running without lag, and I was stunned byt this fact but, as the best dreams teach, the state of beauty crash after 5 minutes. Maybe is already time to fly down and now I suppose this last Vastator explanation could be the main cause: bottleneck. I've metaphorically gave my blood to build this new rig (the best ever built, nothing to compare with long time past consoles and my few past builts) but despite of the best high end pc you can bloody built IF there's no optimization yo'ure doomed to fail. 100% ultra with every function actived seems an utopia so Tommaso Moro seems to be special unofficial guest in every CA realease

(PS: another question: lags and ctd during battles can be also caused by the hot temp of the summer or season-temps are not "so many" able to influence performance?).

sorry for reactivating this thread but I see here some useful posts.

Disable shadows, always! They are fps eater. Also lower AA.

I can't even play Shogun 2 with an AMD quadcore. The melee battles lag so badly it's an exercise in misery. (Fall of the Samurai runs very well though at ultra settings, with SuperGhostboy's injectors)

It's truly appalling how CA have not optimized their melee battle engine for multi-cores yet. How many games has it been? What excuse do they give for not doing it, when this has been the bottleneck for so many years?
