Default Creating a "new" unit for use in custom battles

I was disappointed that the 1650s mod didn't include Sword and Buckler men, so I tried to add some of my own.

I didn't expect using it in the campaign at all, it was just a fun thing for Custom Battles. So I went in and added it to the units_stats_land table. I copied an existing unit and changed some thing around so that it used the Highlander's sword and shield combo and anims. I specifically made sure that there were no abilities that it needed to be junctioned too, ruling out that table entirely.

The game crashed while loading on startup.

Naturally, I figured this was because I was unable to edit units_table, which, due to a bug, is inaccessible in the 1650s mod. So far I could not find any way around it.

    So I tried another mod.

I did the same thing, using existing equipment sets and soldier models, but this time editing the unit_table to add it in. Still crashed on startup.

I realize there are thousands of things that could have gone wrong. It is not a typo, I double checked and redid the whole thing twice to be sure, hoping it was. So is this some kind of common newbie mistake? Any idea what I have messed up?

Also, does anybody know why the unit_table in 1650s is inaccessible? Whenever I click on it, it loads a blank screen or loads the previous table I had loaded.

Nevermind, I appear to have fixed it!

I think the big issue is that I had assigned it the wrong class, making the medium infantry instead of heavy, and for some reason this broke my game. Regardless, I now have working sword and buckler men in 1650!
