    Default [Discussion] Cataloguing social groups

If I'd like the social groups to be catalogued, with a list of all of them, what they're used for, with a decent assessment of how useful they are, will there be any volunteers? It's a lot of work, and you need to get on with it rather than discuss how it's to be done, and where you don't have guidelines you'll have to work it out yourself. If you want to get started, remember to link to the social groups in your descriptions if it's possible, so as to make it easier to identify them.

A Curial Community Team election should have been held way back in April. It might be something they could assist with, along with any other people nice enough to volunteer? I'll be getting an election going on this later today if anyone is wondering.

Under the patronage of the Legendary Urbanis Legio - Mr Necrobrit of the Great House of Wild Bill Kelso. Honoured to have sponsored these great warriors for Citizenship - Joffrey Baratheon, General Brittanicus, SonOfOdin, Hobbes., Lionheartx10, Mangerman, Gen. Chris and PikeStance.

    Currently it's arranged like this:

So you want them arranged in some thread here in the curia? Meaning table 1 "Alliance Games" and then all the SGs in it?
Can you, with your tech tools, also keep track of newly created SGs? As otherwise it would be difficult to update this index. And i see there are 258 SGs in the uncategorized one. They can be put into new\old categories as there are some related to history, some are houses of curia, some are mod related groups etc.

And while doing it, do we have to go through all the stuff to look for any ToS violations? As i believe your sole intention is to somehow have a tighter control on the content that lies within Social groups.

The intention is to have tighter control, and also to avoid losing useful content as happened when GED deleted a number of them, some of which were being used by modders. I've suggested a number of areas which are difficult for moderation to keep patrolled, one of which is social groups. My proposal is to make social groups creatable only by moderators or a similarly controlled group, thus making it practicable to limit the recording of such an index. Then to go through the social groups and mark out those that are being used for mods, games and other stuff that aren't likely to cross the ToS but which are materially useful. Chat threads aren't in that group, and depending on participants can encourage cursing, babe pics, etc.

As a marker of how non-essential threads will be treated, there is a Hex chat social group for all past and present members of Hex, and that's one of those I'll want cut. A bit like when GED was looking for non-essential usergroups and forums to be cut to improve site performance, and I volunteered the Org Tavern and its usergroup.

Isn't all this a kind of administrative task? if so, are you involving the CVRIA in an administrative task?

It's something that could be extremely useful, and I'm wondering whether anyone will volunteer. If no-one volunteers, then I suppose it's another task that will have to be done by staff. And if no-one in staff is available, I'll have to do it myself, since I suggested it.

    I volunteer for this.
Also, I see the reasoning behind this one perfectly. Right now, the social groups are categorized way too hazy, not much clarity there. In fact, there are some groups that wouldn't be even allowed if posted as thread.

    So, what the action plan?

    The action plan is:

    1. Do a list of social groups.
    2. See what they're used for.
    3. Assess their usefulness.

If you want to help, get started on it, see what kind of format you use and learn from your experience how it can be better done, and keep going until all the social groups are recorded thus. There won't be a more detailed action plan until we've got started and we know what's going on.

I am on it, sir. As of now, I've started reviewing them as per the current format. As of now, I'll be keeping the work in my laptop until you suggest an alternative workplace.

Post it here and your findings on what else needs to be done to do the catalogue, eg. more efficient ways of working it through, a format that will be workable for large amounts of data, etc.

I will sort out the **** in a couple of days. Only thing that's holding me for many days is my slow internet connection.

I'll get started on this tomorrow, and start posting the results. If anyone wants to join in, either post the results or PM them to me. Don't say that you'll join in, and then don't do anything.

How do you check if a group is hidden or not? I've tested one of the Games groups, and google does indeed crawl it.

Well i'm not a moderator anymore so i can't view hidden groups anymore that require invitations. So i only presumed if something is not publicly viewable then those crawlers can't take anything from it. Not sure if their working mechanism allows them to bypass forum permissions. But i don't think they can view it. I think that's the reason squid hid Q&S and appeals section recently.

Yeah. So should i continue with this routine?

And it would be probably a good idea if site moderators can look at my lists here, whenever i post them. In this way they can see every group, in smaller parts, and even decide if they're superfluous. Have it approved from an admin and then delete if it's spammy or useless. Like this:
    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/group.php?groupid=2011

As for any violations i catch i will report them.

I won't be too impressed if I'm the only one working on this. People have complained about a lack of things to do, so I've given them something which is within their means and which is genuinely useful for the wider community and not just the Curia. I've given it a week for people to read and consider, made a start myself, and started working on it during the weekend. If despite all that, no-one is prepared to put in the sweat, then the Curia might as well be abandoned as a talking shop for itself.
