Well its not a bad skin but it can use alot of work.
The shield can use alot of fading and wear along the edges, I would assume that's wear it'd take the biggest beating. And as such it should be worn down a bit more.
Clothing is tricky. First of all, your folds are too pronounced and don't work with the mirrored texture. Make them more abiguous , and make them work near the seams (ie, have them almost horizontal will work better).
Also, cloth doesn't quite look like that. Clothing folds are indeed one of, if not the, hardest thing to represent on a texture or in a model. I suggest working from reference as much as possible in that case.
Finally, you didn't dodge and burn correctly... why is the cloth white? If your intent is to just show folds, then don't use dodge and burn, much better to use black/complimentary and white/adjacent-color paint on multiply/screen layers, respecitvely. Right now it looks like wear instead of shadows.
Overall, its not a bad effort, but it needs some fundamental drawing/form improvement, which comes only with practice and observation.
Ah, my favourite type of criticism. I.E. criticising a part of his texture that is in fact a vanilla rome texture. I see it all the time and find it quite humerous, especially in this case when he made it clear that he only tried to make the clothes from scratch.Originally Posted by Professor420
More some of the stuff I've done recently. "Modeled" mostly playing lego infact, using Caius textures stuff.
A Barbarian warlord, a mix of Thracian and others. I'm not very satisfied of the shield symbols tough.
A Barbarian warrior in the same style.
An other barbarian, don't search none of my units are historical or ever existed.
A new african like warrior, for the annimal fur it's a mix of cheatah and tiger.
Same here but an heavy armoured standard bearer using vanilla egypt armour.
A try for a shield texture playing with celtic symbols.
Here come those I like the best : a kind of Asiatic steppe infantry. I reworked BI hunic faces for it, and still use Caius textures modified.
Archers
Levy spearmen
Heavy infantry "Persian immortals like"
I just missed how to show the horse archers, can't find the way to render with them and RTW annimations too...
About the upper model I did it myself and I abondoned the plan of doing entire textures myslef prefering to create models that looks fine in hope to finish my mod (see my sig).
I've done the banner of the african warrior in a less "brighter" and agressive style learining slowly form experience. Everyone has to start from something, I was nearly just able to change skin colors at christmas, learned slowly how to model and skin copying others. (I can't find the reskined WRE legionary I did for imperia romana for compairaison). After 4 months of pause I restarted to work

And perhaps you can enlighten as to why it being a vanilla skin makes it above criticism? Just because CA made it does not make it perfect (and I'd argue it doesn't even make it good, many times). CA Artists had to trade some polish for speed in many cases, small textures such as these require ALOT of polish and work to make them look their best (almost pixel-artish, look at Quake2/3 textures).Originally Posted by Caius Britannicus
His intent was to make a good texture. Whether he used a vanilla skin or not is irrelevant, he should still be aware of how to improve existing textures as well as techniques of improving his own.
Also, something I forgot to address, brighter saturated colors work very well in RTW. As I stated in my podcast interview, RTW has an almost cartoony style, because it helps the overall look on the battlefield, being able to identify units. Sometimes its better to put off some historical accuracy in favor of visual benefit. What I see too often in many mods is just a giant ball of browns and beiges.

some impressive work there

I never said it was above criticism. I said I found it humerous that people give criticism to vanilla textures as if the person created that part the texture themselves.Originally Posted by Professor420
I assume part of the reason Narakir began this thread in the first place (he may correct me if this is not the case) was to receive some feedback on his work. Whether he made it or not is irrelevant - Prof was simply stating how he might be able to make the texture as a whole look better. Constructive criticism is one of the greatest gifts someone can give.Originally Posted by Caius Britannicus

I don't understand why people took this thread for a battlefiled... nevermind here a some new rendered stuff : Still based on Caius' stuff for fantasy purposes.
A marine sailor (Atlantean sailor)
An eastern like warrior-assassin (Empire black bortherhood)
A sort of persian immortal (Empire shields of Araka)
A persian like two handed mace wielder (Empire temple guard)
A fantasyish druid just lack deer horns (Maer Dhuna wiseness)
A personal view of night raiders. (Maer Dhuna fear)
An other eastern/persian a king this time.
This one is a mix of eastern/sarmathian (Thragian warlord guard)
The final version of those african like warriors (Zalikan jaguars)
Return to the mediteranean world with this Thracian hoplite I made for fun and to remplace darthmod's. It's not historical accurate so far. I tried to create a mix of a greek and a thracian, maybe the cloak looks a bit to rich for such guy but it's just for the look and I tried to make all the texture myself based on vanilla's.

Do you know how I can download those units? They are really cool. Good job.
