Default Diplomacy and "attack nation" option

What is the real use of getting one nation to attack another since they never attack any of their armies or settlements or come to our aid if we are involved in a conflict with them. So my question is this.... what is the significance of this option and how best to use it so it can really produce some results for us?

I've never seen it work, i just ignore it.

That option works only in the tiniest of cases. They will attack a nation if and only if they are near each other and within each other's range of armies.

I came to this conclusion because I once asked the Iberians to attack the Gauls and they did. But when I asked them to attack Armenia, they accepted but none of their armies ever came to assist. It's all in the distance I think.

This is only usefull when the faction you ask is near the other faction that you're at war with I think. I never used this, because I bring war to everyone who is in my near. So, it's useless for me... Easy to do with Forced Diplomacy...
