Sorry, but if it has total war in the title then you are out of luck. This engine is not built for sea battles, and while it has been attempted and could feasibly be done, the horrible ai and pathfinding would make it a nightmare and much more hassle than it was worth. The logistics of it simply arent there - sorry to be the bearer of bad news

Well The Heg team spent a fair amount of time looking into this as naval combat is really important in our period the conclusion we came to was while some minor things can be done it simply isnt worth the effort needed. So if you want naval combat im afraid you will have to look at other games

Well, that only effects what the engine has to render. Performance might be slightly faster (or rather probably loading times for battles) but really its more an issue of pathfinding. Missile units could actually probably battle more or less, but hand to hand and the actually taking of ships is a ig problem.I would think on a flat featureless surface like the ocean the AI might do slightly better than on land. While it might be possible to have some form of sea battles, right now there is NO mod that can do it. It would take a huge amount of work and the way the game works means that sea battles would not work correctly. It's not worth the work.
A lot of people want sea battles, but so far, nobody has found a way to do it.
