Number Of Units
As far as I know CA mentioned that Rome II will include about 500-700 units.
That sounds like a very large number to me, so I'm suspicious.
- What will count as unit? If some greek factions share exactly the same unit (i.e. Hellenic Archers), will this count as one unit/unique or does it count multiple for each faction?
- I guess Ships are included. What about agents or other "units"?
- Is there a comparison, so that we can get a feeling about the unit number? How many units were officially included in Rome I, Shogun II, or the famous and huuuge Rome Mod - Europa Barbarorum?
- Do they count only units of playable factions or overall?
Let's see: First of all, I hope they only count unique units, even if they will be available for several factions. Furthermore I expect...say...500 units overall - I take the minimum number (CA exaggerates certainly^^). I'm generous and discount 50 units for ships - ships will mostly be very similar, except for barbarians and maybe some eastern/arabian ships. But maybe there will be some special ones for greece, egypt,... so 50 it is.
Left are 450 units. Because CA stated that all factions get the same attention and not even Rome got more units than the rest, I guess we can divide these units number equally by 12 - under the assumption that every playable faction consists of 100% unique units.
The non-playable factions will mostly have the same units as copies. But there will be some exceptions I guess: Dacia, Thrace, Iberian Peninsula, Seleucids, Bactria, Scythia, Armenia, Arabia, Numidia,...and say 5 other random factions (2 of them are "collectors" who are gathering factions with only 2-3 unique units) will also have a 100% unique set of units. Makes 14 non-playable "unique" factions.
In conclusion we have an unique units denominator of 12 (playable factions) + 14 (non-playable factions) = 26.
So it's -> 450 : 26 = ~17
If my calculation is true you can expect 17 unique units per faction. And because they will only make 50-75% of the overall units of a faction, you can expect 25-30 units per faction in total. That would be great, but I can't believe it. That's a pretty huge number in my opinion! Possible? What have I missed?

Re: Number Of Units
The only thing i can think of is say roman peasant archers will look different to say Egyptian peasant archers, while they are technically one type of unit they might count them as two, but till we see the roaster for every faction who knows, i say more the merrier as long is there are not retarded units like man-bear-pig and no major spamming by the ai

Re: Number Of Units
700 units, 500 land, "200" naval (the ship system works differently in Rome II, each naval unit consists of 3 "parts")
I've counted all the confirmed units that CA have talked about, and that we have seen in videos/pictures, and right now, without even knowing a thing about most factions rosters, or mercenaries, it's already up to about 95 unique (land) units.
Obviously some factions will have similar units. I can see the greek factions (Sparta, Athens, Epirus) sharing around 5-10 units, and then having the more elite ones be unique.
You also have to keep mercenaries in mind here, they make up a pretty big part. In the E3 video, we saw both "Egyptian Infantry" and "Mercenary Egyptian Infantry", the mercs being inferior and costing more.
