    Default Ram

I know where you put RAM sticks, but do you have to install it with a CD or something like that? I was wondering if I could take a memory stick from one of my old Compaqs, it's 512MB, and transfer it to my new computer. If so, what would I need to do, ie use a CD to install it, or when inserted install it with a program off the internet? And also, how would it make my computer better?

    Salaam,

Ive installed ram recently on my computer and there was no software needed with it. I highly doubt software would be included, but you do need to make sure that 1) the ram you are putting in is compatible with your system 2) you have the necessary expansion slot and/or your computer can handle the amount of ram you are putting in. I tried putting too much into my comp once and it wouldnt boot up (nothing drastic however, merely removing the ram stick made it go away with no other problems)

No you don't need anything other than the ram stick itself.

Just make sure you're using compatible ram and that you know how much ram your Motherboard can support.

Just turn off your computer, disconnect all cables and power supply, open the case and put in the ram stick. Then close up the case, reconnect everything and turn your computer on.

    Done.

I'm guessing you want to put the ram in your HP computer right? I don't think it will work, since the HP uses the newer DDR2 standard and the older Compaq probably uses the DDR standard.

    So it won't be compatable?

P.S.-It's okay, my uncle has tons of DDR2 memory sticks.

Make sure you ground yourself as well - its pretty rare but if you get enough static electricity built up you can wreck your motherboard

Try and make sure that they are fast ones. Also, you will most likely have to use them two at a time.

How do I know if they're fast or not?
