If the day should come that Steam goes bankrupt or whatever (fat chance...lol), then yes, their portfolio of games would be patched to allow "offline play". At least that is what i remember from an interview long ago. I dont think that has changed.

On top of that, Valve and by extension Steam is a healthy company with good business practices, goodwill and a lot of money, so the chances of Steam going down any time soon are practically zero. They are are the forefront by miles when it comes to the future of games distribution.
