Default Have Spartan/Hoplite Shield Walls been confirmed?

*Haven't seen any threads on this*

Forget the movie 300. The Spartans had the shield wall which involved them being upright, body against the shield and the spear above free to stab enemies who crash into the formation. Has this formation been confirmed for this entry of the TW series?

We've seen the Sacred Band taking up the formation that is shown in 300, but am curious to know about the Spartans since every faction will have their own formations.

You may think this is a stupid question, but think for a second...it would be hard to make a shield wall formation while allowing every individual soldier in that formation to engage enemies while still maintaining the formation. It is and even sounds like a hard thing to do. Personally, I have a feeling that this isn't implemented because of how hard it would be. Now that our animations are based on 1 vs 1, I just can't see it being done.

It would be great to get confirmation on this.

btw, If it isn't in the game this time around, I wouldn't be surprised. It would be too hard to implement without allowing individual soldiers break rank to fight individually...

Units in phalanx will use synced animations (ie. they won't start dueling individual opponents)

Overhand stabbing hasn't been confirmed or denied, there was a thread about overhand vs. underhand on the official forums, and a CA member commented that they believed that both variants were used...but he didn't comment on if they would both be in the game.

Synced animations sound cool. If that means like 5 vs 5 at the same time so no individual 1 vs 1 look like they are breaking ranks, then that will be cool. I can see custom 5 vs 5 animations which were specifically made to make sure they all fight and stay in ranks at the same time. I can see how 1 vs 1 would look un-coordinated.

I dont think spartans will fight in 1vs1 style, nor any of the other greek/hellenistic factions. It will be fail to see that, same goes for the romans.

I think Jack Lusted said the Greek Phalanx will be in the game.

Yep, both macedonian and greek phalanx will be in the game and they will be different. Don't know if the sacred band pic represents a phalanx or if the unit is just bracing.

You'd sincerely hope so considering how important it was to an included playable faction.

But yeah I also hope it is historically realistic (overhead spears) and toggle-able so they can fight in 1 to 1 when/if the phalanx is breached.

Definitely. Even though historically the Spartans tried everything in their power to maintain the phalanx even when it was breaking apart, we would love the feature to de-activate the phalanx (which obviously will happen lol) to just let the enemy feel it!
