Default Navy Protection for Coastal Cities

We have now "sea regions". To use a sea region, we need to clear it from enemy navy, or we will be attacked. There is no way to pass through enemy navy with one ship defending a whole army without conflict anymore.

So, sea regions are protected by navies now. Should the coastal cities be protected in similar way by navies from the neighbor sea region?

When Pontus army attack Ephesus, Athenian navy in the Aegean sea region should automatically reinforce Ephesos by its land army and naval catapults IMO.

i doubt the navy will respond to threats a few regions over, especially not automatically.. however if you have a fleet lying in the searegion right next to ephesus they should be there in the battle (if its an actual combined land and sea battle in the first place)

I think that's part of the reason for naval regions. Makes it easier to reinforce your army in that region. With FOTS there was a lot of micro with you fleets on the map.

I think the way it will work will be the same as FoTS - i.e. the navy will have an interception range where it can assist land units.

One thing I am slightly puzzled by however is the battle of the Nile River. In this circumstance you have got 1 sea zone (the nile) with 2 opposed fleets present. How is this possible? I thought with the new sea zones that opposing fleets could not occupy the same zone?

well as you could see, the romans had to declare on the egyptians first before the battle happens, which means that normally your fleets can roam freely as long as the searegion isnt inhabited by an enemy fleet, that will force a battle between you two

If this is implemented it will make navies way more useful than previous games. I barely ever used navies, really only for trade and transport. I'm also really glad that little one boat fleets wont be able to sail around your ships and hit your trade.

It makes sense that a navy would occupy a whole region as opposed to a fixed position because we are abstracting the location of a fleet (which has far more mobility than an army) over the course of a whole year. I'm curious though, if a navy can occupy a sea region from a port, or if they actually have to be out in the water.

As Jungle Rhino mentioned, it is curious how two fleets (especially enemy fleets) are going to occupy the same region. Perhaps they exist across the entire region for general purposes, but need to occupy a specific position for the case of ship to ship combat? It'll be interesting to see how it actually works.
