    Default Biggest Enemy to Rome?!?!

I'm interested in what people think, who was Rome's worst enemy. Was it Phyrrus (Pyrros)? Hannibal? Mithridates? Antiochus? Someone not on here? (I wont make it a poll because there are many leaders or peoples that gave Rome a hard time that i will forget to mention.

I feel Hannibal gave Rome the biggest scare, invading their home country, defeating every legion that was sent after him. However, Mithridates pushed the Romans off of Asia minor multiple times before they finally rallied to bring him down. I am interested to hear what others have to say on this, or if it even becomes a topic of interest.

Hannibal of course. When you affect a people's psyche so bad they use you to scare their children you've done aomething right.

Everyone beleives that hes real. Pretty solid evidence.

And as for outside threats (structural weaknesses/etc. become too jarring and complex) Hannibal definitely.

Spartacus was overhyped. No way he could've defeated the Whole Roman empire. He just got off some good ambushes and surprise tactics. Once that good army came his way, he got devoured. Although his body was never found...

Interesting answer, the Ottomans were the ultimate fall of the "Roman Empire." However, is the Byzantine Empire or "Eastern Roman Empire" still even the "Roman Empire" at this point? Shouldn't they call themselves Constantinoplians ? I think they just went easy and called themselves Greek no?

But it seems Hannibal was the biggest enemy, or atleast majority leans that way... Its interesting though because Hannibal was so early in the Roman history... Anyone in Late Roman history give them a run for their money? perhaps Attila ? nah he was stopped by priests... the Visigoths... the German tribes?

Nah, they were calling themselves Romans to the very end. Where the heck do you get your informations from?

Well I guess I made a logical guess which was wrong, I based it off of the huge difference between Rome total war Rome and Byzantine Rome with culture and even religion (being the lead of the Orthodox and breaking away from "Roman" Catholic) But I guess I never looked into how they saw themselves. I guess Rome was the source of their empire so it would make sense to continue to call yourself Roman even after you have moved even the capital of your empire.

-- And I meant this to be more of an open ended question then a poll, I dont know every single enemy of Rome, so I thought a poll would limit the thread, my appologies of this new thread annoyed you..

The ancient Romans (of the Republic) had two great enemies. One was Hannibal and the other was Pyrrhus. Hannibal Barca was considered a "Boogey Man" while Pyrrhus was considered an honorable enemy. True story.

The Imperial Romans was a different story.
When Hiero returned to besiege their base (Messana) in 265 BC the Mamertines called for help from a nearby fleet from Carthage, which occupied the harbor of Messana. Seeing this, the Syracuse forces retired, not wishing to confront Carthaginian forces. Uncomfortable under the Cathaginian "protection," the Mamertines now appealed to Rome to be allowed into the protection of the Roman people. At first, the Romans did not wish to come to the aid of soldiers who had unjustly stolen a city from its rightful possessors. However, unwilling to see Carthaginian power spread further over Sicily and get too close to Italy, Rome responded by entering into an alliance with the Mamertines. In response, Syracuse allied itself with Carthage, imploring their protection. With Rome and Carthage brought into conflict, the Syracuse/Mamertine conflict escalated into the First Punic War.

Hannibal could have destroyed Rome if only he wasnt so stubborn.

I also think that the biggest threat came from the inside, they fought too much amongst themselves.

I think the Cimbrii and the Teutones were great threats, too, in the 2.century bc. They were one of the major reasons which led to the Marian reforms. They annihilated 3 roman armies in a row, and the Roman Republic would be done, if they chose to settle down in Italy, instead they wandered through half Europe, and later both tribes were annihilated.

Hannibal, he occupied south Italy for quite a time and had the chance to conquer rome. If he had won, history would have changed.
