Default Can we trust the critics of specialty magazines?

I mean, can I trust a magazine that thrives on advertising, paid by companies who they criticizes?
We all know, that more and more games are on the hands of few editors, those who control the market, and we all know that part of the revenue of these magazines is through advertising. When they revise this game, they will be honest?Or they will be condescending? Will give more emphasis to the visual appearance, or will the overall quality of the game,I remember the euphoria after Empire, they rate it 9/10 and this game have so many issues at realize, can we trust they?
Maybe it is best to wait for independent criticism, or even here, we have a better idea if it is worth buying the game.

Better idea-don't wait for reviews period, actually play the game, or the demo, and form your own goddamn opinion of it.
Aelfwine, then, spoke out and valiantly declared: 'Let us call to mind those declarations we often uttered over mead, when from our seat we heroes in hall would put up pledges about tough fighting; now it can be proved who is brave. I am willing to make my lineage known to all, that I was from a substantial family in Mercia. My grandfather was called Ealhelm, a wise nobleman blessed with worldly wealth. The thanes among that people shall not reproach me for my wanting to get out of this army, to make my way home, now that my lord leader is lying hacked down in battle. To me that is the greatest grief: he was both my kinsman and my lord." Then he moved forward and turned his attention to revenge, so that with his spear he struck a seaman among the army so that he lay dead among the ground, destroyed by his weapon. Then he exhorted his comrades, his friends and companions, that they should advance.

Or wait for reviews from hardcore gamers like us (from the forums). Knowing how critical we are, our reviews might help you make a more educated decision about buying the game.

I won't be paying any attention to user reviews on this forum precisely because of how "critical" many of the people here are.

Or don't wait at all. I've purchased every TW game (a few of them more than once) and never regretted buying any of them.

You can trust every critic and reviewer to a point. Make your own conclusions based on observation and critical thinking. There is no need to over think this in any way, just pay attention to the information they provide. Me personally I like to read reviews from "professional" sites and magazines, I may not always agree, but they offer their own insight as well. Just soak up as much information as you can, including from regular joes...

Was that a question? Since you already basically answered it.

Every review is an opinion of an invidual, being it a magazine or a dude doing youtube reviews. In that regards everybody is a reviewer. Good review brings enough info about the game so that you can make own conclusions about it. You might value one thing over other that the reviewer does value, but that is irrelevant in the end if the review explains how those things work, and makes clear what is a fact considering the game, and what is an personal opinion of the reviewer, so you can judge the matter yourself. In this regards for example number-ratings are irrelevant, there is no global standard for them, and the result of this rating values highly on what aspects the reviewer puts over others, and these are, again, personal opinions. I hope the whole "number" thing would just go away, since the actual review itself is the only thing that actually matters for someone determining is that game for me.

In that regards it all goes down to the actual review, a magazine that has commercials for the title they are reviewing might have legit review, just a poor one, or biased, or something else, so in the end it doesn't matter. It is all about the review and common sense, and I would personally check reviews from multiple sources to get ideal picture, and to determine if someone is just flatout lying about facts, or just isn't making clear all points of the game.

I don't fully trust reviews from game magazines, I prefer independent people like Angry Joe or Dark Syde Phil.

And its painful because he is good. He do not need to be a monkey to entertain me. He needs to give good insight to the game mechanic and how it holds it all together.

no matter how negative a person may bee. nothing can follow that failed launch. Total halibut said it would be a problem and I bought it anyways -.-'. My point is I may now have jinxed the game. but I don't think Rome will have same problems. Unless they don't allow pre-loading some weeks before release. but again SimCity was a unique case, in the same basket as Diablo 3. And I don't think Rome 2 will get the same problems. only some different as stupid AI and bad optimizing and crashes all the time.

No, i never trust big shot game review sites, magazines etc. They do not dare to write a real critic. Instead they practically choose to please famous game developers and huge publishers. Otherwise cash flow would stop.

    I trust Angry Joe!
