Default [ROME] Crash upon naval victory against pirates/rebels

I'm playing the Imperial Campaign as Brutii. Whenever I auto-resolve a naval battle against Pirates and win, the game crashes.

    Pirates attack my ships.
    I hit auto-resolve.
The Clear Victory menu pops up. I can view the Battle Statistics as well.
As soon as I click on the check-mark to dismiss the menu, the game crashes.

If I lose (either normally or by an auto_win command in the Rebels favor) the game doesn't crash.

I've tried just waiting at the screen for the game to "catch up", validating the file cache via Steam and it doesn't help.

I have the same problems, not only with naval battles, but just roaming the map. I have searched many forums and Google results for this problem, but I always stumbled on topics like these: the problem is described, but the only reactions are users asking to specify the problem: mod? Which type of pc? etc. while OP never answers back :/

Well, have no fear Asterix for this OP is responding.

It turns out that problem is the result of a combination of Steam and mods.

Obviously modded files hanging around the Rome folder will cause a problem. But what was interesting was what Steam did.

A "complete reinstall" won't work, because for some reason Steam "remembers" the modded files and installs them too. I noticed this after my old saves were present as well as a folder from Roma Surrectum was still in the Rome folder.

The way to fix this is to essentially minesweep your Rome folder by deleting anything that looks like a modded file and then some, then using Steam to verify the integrity of the game cache. This method gets rid of the modded files hanging around and ensures the vanilla files are intact.
