Error message

I play Medieval II on Steam. In both Vanilla and Third Age, I've gotten a message saying that the game encountered an unspecified error and will now close. Anybody know what's wrong?

Edit: I never got this message last time I had the game installed on my desktop. I don't get the message on my laptop.

Can you start a new campaign in either?
Can you go back to your last save and play the turn?

I can do that. The problem is that I have to auto-resolve every battle.
