Default SHould units be able to swim

In barbarian invasion, certain units were able to swim across rivers, which would help them out a lot in a battle and make bridge battles more difficult for the defender. DO you think this feature should be implemented for special units?

no they should sink. I doubt anyone with a right mind would want to go into a river with lorica hamata on.

Yes but only for Light Infantry and Special units as you have mentioned. This would make river battles once again a bit more interesting for both the attacker and defender.

I'm already assuming that certain units CAN swim across water......

After all, on the campaign map you can ford a river at any point (albeit it costing you a turn).

No. that turn is spent building boats/a bridge to cross with.

I for one hope that light/special units have a limited ability to swim.

I also think there should be extra conditions, to do with your technological advancement. I doubt whether most barbarians, even when just in trousers, could swim.

Although at the same time, have any of you tried to swim a big river? It's nowhere near as easy as it appears.......

For small streams or very shallow waters, maybe yes, but they should suffer a super-penalty when fighting a defensive force waiting on the other side. Water makes clothes heavier and it's not nice to fight in those conditions.

No - heavy/medium infantry, heavy horse
Yes - Light infantry, light (and maybe medium) horse, elephants (lol!)

Provisos - All units swimming lose the defensive stats from their shields whilst in the water. So they are much more vulnerable to archer/javelin fire.

Batavian Elite Auxillary Troops for the Romans and Batavians Warriors should have this ability. Maybe a few other Units, but please not more than a handfull.

In that case, just light infantry but, would it be profitable? NO

i know its not smart to swim with 30 kg of armor , christ its already heavy enough with clothes and shoes

i was responding to nepos that said most barbarians wouldnt be able to swim, but now that we are talking about shields, since the celtic shields where mostly made of wood and leather why not use them to swim.

Maybe light skirmishing units with very little armour could swim, but no one else. Ever tried to swim wearing body armour? I don't recommend it

I would say no, majority of the population doesn't know how to swim even today.
