Default Swapping units from faction to faction in Third Age/MOS

I've been playing Third Age with MOS for a while now and really enjoy it. After seeing the new Hobbit trailer i really got a feeling for an evil Thranduil campaign. The Silvan units do not look as much alike the units in the trailer as the Lorien units do and I was wondering if I could switch them from one faction to the other. I looked through the data folder and thought I had found it. In the export_descr_unit I switched the units of the Lorien elves with those of the Silvan elves. Didn't work unfortunately, am I doing something wrong or am I missing something? Ty in advance.

This is actually not the MOST straight-forward thing to attempt, but there certainly isn't any reason why it can't be done if you're willing to put enough time into it!

First of all I'll link a couple of helpful resources:

    1) Stephan's "How to add new units into the game" -- This will show you how to add the correct entries into the battle_models.modeldb and export_descr_units

    2) Mythic_Commodore's "Guide to export_descr_buildings.txt" -- Basic guide for getting to know your way around the EDB file

    3) Mythic_Commodore's "Guide to export_descr_unit.txt" -- Basic guide for getting to know your way around the EDU file.

** I highly recommend doing your text editing with Notepad ++, which you can download (here). **

Ok so here are basically the procedure:

    *For the unit cards*

    1) In \Third_Age_3\data\ui you'll need to copy and past the unit's appropriate tga files into both the "unit info" and "units" folder. Ex. if you wanted a unit to be added from Lorien to Silvan Elves you would paste the unit's .tga from \Third_Age_3\data\ui\units\saxons to \Third_Age_3\data\ui\units\mongols . **You need to do this for both unit info and units folders**

*For the unit models and textures*

    2) In \Third_Age_3\data\unit_models add the appropriate "mongols" entry into the battle_models.modeldb for each new unit you want the silvan elves to be able to use (see Stephan's guide at the top for how to do this).

    *For the unit ownership*

    3) in \Third_Age_3\data scroll down until you find the export_descr_units.txt file. For each Lorien unit you will need to add "mongols" to the bottom "ownership, era0, era 1, and era2 entries.

*For recruiting your unit from buildings in a campaign*

    4) in \Third_Age_3\data scroll down until you find the export_descr_buildings.txt file. Here you will need to add the "mongols" faction into the already existing Lorien recruitment lines. Ex. requires factions { saxons, mongols, }

Ok that's just about the best I can do in terms of giving you a sense of what needs to be done. Not a small task but great practice for getting to know your way around the folders! Please feel free to post problems or any specific questions if you encounter them along the way in the "Modding Questions and Help" thread found (HERE).

    Good Luck!

Thank you, I will look into it and I am very interested in learning a lot about editing files etcetera so i don't mind at all . I thought it would be as easy as swapping faction data but apparently it isn't xD.

Adding units in MOS simply does not work.

I made 2 mods, many units but when I try to add single unit to MOS, nope. CTD. I know I am not doing anything wrong, do you know whats the catch with MOS?

Use notepadd++ is the catch, the text files are in a different format to the vanilla game.

Hmm this happened to me too, turn on crash logs for Medieval and you'll be able to spot the error in the logs. Or its possible you have reached the unit card max in your cities which causes it to crash

Has it reached the 500 unit limit?
