Today I couldn't upload all the helmets. Other helmets I'll add tomorrow. I'll add them regularly if I will remember something.

Not that I don't appreciate historical accuracy... but, what is the point of having an encyclopedia on helmets?

So smart people from the east coast can ask what is the point of having an encyclopedia on helmets?

I do like the Thracian, type 1 though.

Why people wrote 'what is point?' Why you ignore this hard work? If you aren't interested you should stop attack. Maybe some people will be interested in this thread. It is good thread, very interresting and learning. Thread could be good source for modding teams, or maybe CA will use it too? We don't know.

I love seeing the ancient original ones, to think they are thousands of years old.

Thracian helmets are awesome and practicall in the same time. No wonder they have been adopted instead of greek classic ones. I wonder if the Phrigian type can be considered a thracian helmet too ?

KLA, what's the difference between the Thracian and the Phrygian-Chalcidian type? I'm asking because that particular photo is of a helmet which was found in Thracian territory and is classified in Bulgarian sources as Thracian, and as a matter of fact quite a few sources refer to the Phrygian helmet as Thracian, due to the Thracians also using the Phrygian cap. I also read that one defining feature of the Thracian helmet are the cheek guards, with embossed decorations resembling a beard and moustaches.

My personal favourite is type 5 as well, although the addition of a visor would make it even better. Modern caps and helmets have visors for a reason.

That was my question too and an almost identical point in an older thread here.
Either it got its name after the Phrigian cap worn by Phrigian or by most of the far more numerous Thracian tribes I suppose the Thracians made the wide use of it and populararize it and therefore adopted by hellenistic armies or even in Carthage mixed ones. So I think this was the most popular and the most important piece of weaponry greeks and other imported from Thracians

By the way KLA can you include a healthy ammount of varieties of this type of helmet which AndyMoszejevsky the 3D artist calls it " Ascolon" helmet. This propably was as widely used as the phrigian one but later on and I wonder which helmet evolved from ? probaly again a thracian one

All the helmets KLA lists are of Greek design and originate in Greece. The names have nothing to do with the origin of the helmets but we know for sure that the artisans who made them had in mind actual caps or hats of various origins for their inspiration.Greek metallurgy was sophisticated enough (exquisite casting techniques due to the bronze statues experiences) to produce realistically reproduced forms.
We know for sure that Thracian helmets are of Athenian origin due to the very early representation of them in Athenian pottery (5th cent BC)and the Athenian presence and colonies in Thrace which may explain the inspiration or the name . Phrygian can be classified as modification of the Thracian which instead of a Thracian form of hat/cap the inspiration is the phrygian cap.
