    Default SURRENNDER

Was thinking if there could be an option in battle when enemy units surrender on the field. this would be the same as routing the unit and they would raise their hands and lay down their arms. Your units automatically take them into custody. Some units will still route normally if they have a chance to escape and there is no enemy after them. At the end of the battle you can either execute, ransom, enslave or Jail. The last option, being one I made up. Would create POW camps all on certain parts of the map. The benefit to this could be diplomatic against your enemy. they are more likely to sue for peace to get their warriors back. Your standing in the world would go up, since people respect what you do with your prisoners. It could help to a diplomatic win.
The draw back would be that your enemy could free these camps, and just take there soldiers back, but you could have the option to kill everyone inside getting a diplomatic penalty as well.
Also it would take some money of upkeep to hold those camps.
Now your soldiers could completely neglect taking prisoners of war if they have this tradition.

    "Take no Prisoners"
Your units take no prisoners, kill anyone that surrenders.
    +1 morale
    +25 exp

They kill the ones that surrendered, then gain a small morale boost, and a small experience boost

Spent 5 minutes just looking at the woman haha . You know, Sun Jetzu, here's what I think; I think all units that are routing and get surrounded in an open field should be captured, but the only time units can fight to the death is when they are putting up a last stand in defence of a city. So basically, where a unit would fight to the death in a field, just replace that with them being captured, but only make fighting to the death possible in city warfare. I do like this feature. It brings back what Medieval 2 had, but this time, whatever you would choose to do with those prisoners would have a global effect and will affect your faction's standing amongst others. But yeah, there definitely should be some army bonuses and traits related to this. Nice idea

Ask my grandfather if he felt a morale boost when he was forced to execute two survivors in WW2.

I think it would be the opposite.

Thanks, I guess I made this more for field armies, not city ones. And Romans thats a valid point that nowadays it might have the opposite effect. But sometimes with warrior cultures it makes men more blood thirsty and it does bring up their morale. There was an episode in spartacus where they wanted to kill the romans in the town to appease the army. They even had prisoners fight to the death at the ending. Even in Vietnam and stuff there were mass killing of POWs In WW2 the u.s killed surrendered japanese as well. The morale thing is more for their times but it has happened alot in history, sometimes it brings up morale. And yes guys she's the crazy german chick from Spartacus season 2 all the way to the ending.
    Here she is

Cant find the full clip but the picture is from this battle.

Correct me if I'm wrong but in those times didn't the losing army get completely slaughtered. Wounded and captured enemies got their throats cut.

    No you're not.

Though it depends on the circumstances.

Generally speaking you slaughter everything because if you let them live they'll cause problems for you down the road. This was during that Iceni rebellion where the Roman General gave no quarter and every legionarie killed whoever he came across after the battle to the point that they resort to daggers because they were so tired.

Would be the case with barbarians like the Germanics I reckon, but more civilised factions would put you into slavery or something. In fewer cases, make examples of you. If my side was losing, I'd get the hell out of there. It's not cowardice if you plan to come back with the next army. Just say the General order a last minute retreat, not like he can say any different, he'd be dead haha

Good idea, I've always thought this, it's likely that some troops would have tried to surrender rather than run, but I don't think it will happen in Rome 2, with the 3 months left they probably don't have time to get the animations for kneeling or raising their hands (not a historian so I don't know if this is a modern sign of surrender or not, kneeling is quite symbolic though)

I agree, to be honest at this point all our ideas are going for the next game. Unless already included in Rome 2.

I would like more options with what to do at the end of a battle with prisoners. It was one of my favorite things in Medieval 1 to capture as many guys as I could when they started routing.

Often one side would negotiate a surrender. Sometimes even being allowed to walk home without weapons or just march out of a siege.
I am assuming prisoners were valuable for swapping or slavery.

Sun why are you always posting fantasy stuff? Are you looking forward to warhammer fantasy?

I post ideas, that is all. I wouldnt want warhammer since I'm not a fan. I simply post ideas that happen in war and ways to implement them in the game. If by "posting fantasy" you are referring to my Amazon and Berserker threads. Those were more to see what the community thought about adding them since they were from the first Rome. Or if you mean "fantasy" because you think that armies never surrendered and were either treated kindly or with malice. Then I think we need to redefine the word "fantasy".

I was indeed referring to your amazon and berserker threads in combination with your pictures in this thread. They just made me think you were some kind of anime alternate history peddler.

I like Anime, I like pedaling....
Anyway I figured as much but dont you worry, the verdict. Berserkers good, Amazons bad. I added the picture because it was kinda like a surrendered disarmed roman about to be stabbed by Saxa from Spartacus. Anyway this feature has already been in added in Medieval 2, but I wanted to take it to the next level also adding it to the battle map

NO PRISONER! Give them nothing, but take from them, everything. That's my way of play in med 2. Have a POW camp and keeping/ release prisoner is too much risk for revolt and they may come to you with weapon in hand again. So no. But I may consider this is a good idea with the slavery system in Rome 2.

    btw:
I like chicks with weapons, especially with a half reveal clothes like this one.
You always seem to find chicks picture every time =) good job man

I always send in mercenaries for ashigaru jobs in rome. They would be the first line to hit a strong point while the remainder of my unit swirled around. Mercenaries to me are as good as ashigaru.
