    Default Port defences

I was wondering what kind of defences a port could have, because if you could take a city with only a navy you usually have to capture it's port, and it

would make sense to defend it. Maybe have a wall in the sea, traps or maybe even the claw of Archimedes when you attack Syracuse. In the first trailer
the Roman navy simply sailed into Carthages harbour and came out of their ships without anything to stop them. What are your ideas about this?

Best defense I think will be your own ships and artillery pieces to blow 'em apart ,

steam powered submarines right?.... yes i am kidding, i expect bringing your ships into the harbor will be a bit risky you might get more access to fire into the city but now your boats are in archery range and fire arrows don't play well with wooden ships. then you are in a confined location and the fire could spread ship to ship.

Most ports would use a big chain to keep ships out, but I would imagine there will be towers with siege engines once you upgrade your walls/towers.

Pretty much this. You can actually see a few (unfastened) chains in the Siege of Carthage demo. However, if the chains were utterly impenetrable, they would create gameplay balance difficulties.

Maybe you could just destroy the wall/tower the chains are attached too, they would mainly be there to slow the fleet down.

If you play as the Iceni you'll be able to teleport trough space and time Jack Aubrey and his Surprise to blow your enemies away, and if you develop the technology enough you will be able to get Nelson too.

On a more serious note I think that your own ships, towers with fire arrows, ballistas or catapults would do the trick, plus the city garrison to fight eventual landing parties.

I have to say if Alexandria on the siege map looks like what it is in the Cleo trailer, it will be a ***** and a half to take from the harbor - if you manage to break bring down the tower that holds the chain in place, you still need to get in the harbor and maneuver to let your men disembark from it, all the while being under attack from three sides. Also, how will your men take the inner walls unless your ships have some kind of siege equipment or onagers to bring down a section of the wall...

    Heavy risk...

As long as you can set up underwater mines I'm happy.
