I would suggest buliding your own, as it allows you much more freedom as well as better prices, but if you are going to insist on that site, I suggest the following:
    Bargain 64,
    CPU: Athlon 64 3800+ X2
    Ram: 1GB
    Graphics: Geforce 7600GT
Harddrive: select how much you need
Everything else: Go for the cheapest

Should work out to about 750 or so.

I'm gonna build a PC maybe in the next few days... I'd like to ask what motherboard/CPU is recommended. I want to build an AMD, but if there is something Intel based out there that would fit into the 500 dollar range for MoBo/CPU/Memory (graphics card excluded) then I'm all ears. Oh yeah, PCI-E only.
The key is to to be expandable, OC-able, functional. I don't need anything gadgety either.

    thanks!

I agree with Lee1026, building your computer from the best components, for the cheapest price you can find is your best bet. In all likelihood, building a system yourself is, I would guess, 25-45% cheaper than going out and buying a new computer. Plus, doing it yourself ensures that you have everything you want already in your system, instead of spending the extra cash for new components for a store bought computer.

The DFI infinty AM2 would do well for the mobo, and the 3800X2 would do well for the CPU. It is cheap, overclockable, and quite reliable.

Yes, I would recommend the duo core over pentium 4. Pentiums are not as good at games than both Athlons and Duo Core, both kick it's ass. And as Lee says, pentium 4's are roughly 4 times hotter than core duo.

Well, put the old harddrive in the new computer should work.

The system should be very fast. It should run a 30 second superpi, and a 3Dmark 03 score somewhere in the 20K range.

Buy 2 more fans and jam it in. It won't be a very hot computer.

Any case should do, the AeroCool case is pure advertising, the big fan spins so slow it doesn't make any difference.

that brings me my next question. what case do you guys recommend? I don't want that 9 dollar thing, I'm very fancy when it comes to cases. I don't want too much flashy stuff (just a littlebit), but a digital temp reader as well as functionality (vents good) and cool look, what I'm looking for. Perhaps a site dedicated to cases ?

I got a Raidmax X1, and I love it. The design is simple and sleek and it even got a removeable motherboard tray! A first for a case this cheap.
