    Default Historical battles

With the Battle of the Nile gameplay coming out fairly soon I have been wondering what other historical battles may end up being in the game. This is just speculation of some I would like to see.

    Gaugamela

A decisive battle that took place in 331 BC between Alexander the Great of Macedon and Darius III of Persia. Considered to be one of Alexander's finest victories it led to the downfall of the Achaemenid Empire. The vastly outnumbered Macedonian army won due to a number of circumstances. Darius feared a night attack and kept his army awake and on alert. Although a night attack was suggested by Parmenion, a general of Alexander this idea was dismissed by Alexander, proclaiming that "he would not steal his victory". Due to this Darius' army was exhausted by morning. Other causes for Darius' defeat include Alexander's mousetrap tactic rendering the Persian chariots useless. When the chariots reached the Macedonian line the first lines would step aside , opening a gap in which the horses would enter as they would refuse to run into spears. When the horses entered the "mouse trap" they would be unable to move as they would be faced with the second rank of spears and the riders could be killed. This coupled with Alexander's decisive maneuver in which he and his companion cavalry started moving away from the battle field with peltasts hidden behind them. Darius fearing he would be flanked ordered a large portion of his cavalry to ride parallel to Alexander's. At the right moment Alexander formed his cavalry into a wedge with himself leading it and charged directly into the the flank of the Persian centre. Before the Persian cavalry could act the peltasts engaged them. At this point the Persians started to rout and Alexander had to make a crucial decision, pursue Darius and end the war or save Parmenion and his troops who was under heavy attack. Alexander chose the latter. After this battle the Persian Empire was devided into two parts, East and West. Darius had planned to raise another army to face Alexander as he believed he would advance on Babylon. Darius wished for his satraps to remain loyal however he was murdered by his satrap Bessus who attempted to sieze power. This had greatly angered Alexander who gave his respected foe Darius a proper burial, Bessus was not as lucky and was captured, tortured and killed.

Here is a documentary a watched a while ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUu2rz8WhZg
As has been mentioned in another post it isn't in the time frame however if another Alexander expansion were to be released this battle who very likely be included.

    Philippi

The final battle in the Wars of the Second Trimvirate in 42 BC which involved Mark Antony and Octavian against Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus, the two main conspirators of the assassination of Julius Caesar. After the assassination Cassius and Brutus fled Rome eventually digging into the west of Philippi and fortified when they knew Antony and Octavian were approaching. Antony attempted a number of times to initiate a battle however this was unsuccessful until Antony started building a causeway through the marshes in an effort to turn Cassius' left flank. The first battle was brought about on October 3 when Cassius tried to cut off Antony's forces in the marshes. Antony's forces charged and routed those of Cassius and captured the fortifications. Brutus meanwhile attacked Octavian's forces, driving them back and plundering their tents. This however allowed the enemies forces to reform and avoid being routed. Cassius could not see this success and thinking that they had lost a crushing defeat, committed suicide by ordering his freedman to kill him. Brutus' had lost his best strategic mind so decided to hold his position and wear the enemy out. On October 23 after a bloody battle, Brutus' forces were pushed back and retreated. Brutus' himself committed suicide as his army routed. Caesars death was avenged and the battle marked a high point in Antony's military career although this power would slowly erode.
