Default An Idea: Representation of army and navy on campaign map

I have an idea (and wish) about representation of armies and navies in campaign map since the Rome Total War. But it didn't take place in any TW games. What are your opinions?

Well, is not a bad idea.
I remember that things i've seen things like this in 2D games, but often not in 3D ones were is preferred use a single giant boy.
However I have no problem with both methods.

It's looking better than the original to my mind. Good idea.

Have been hoping for this since the original Rome.

Looks better in my opinion, some RomeI/medievalII mods had simliar models. I always wondered why they choosed one giant model instead of showing a Encampment/Army.

When i first saw those banner-holding generals the first thing i thought was that maybe it would look better if the representation of the army consisted of 2 units: a standardbearer holding a long, big banner with both hands following (behind) the fully armed general, with sword/spear + shield or at least just the weapon.

But the the general holding both a shield and the banner (and in such a physically impossible way) definatelly looks bad. I hope they change it.
It would look much better if the shaft on the banner was longer (ie. went down to the knee of the general)

For Navies yes, for Armies, no.
Remember, remember, the third of september, the Rome II treason and plot. I know of no reason why pre-order treason should ever be forgot.

I have to agree with Hibernicus, it would be a large improvement for navies, but I seriously dread the Civ 5 feeling I get from the way armies would be portrayed with OP's idea.

    Don't really care personally.

Problem with changing the army one is if it's a major character like Caesar, how are we gonna know which one's him if it's a bunch of little dudes, instead of one guy?

A portrait or name of the general on the top of the flag would work.

    That would look silly.

Just not something that needs to be changed IMO.

I think characters work better, you can differentiate different generals and characters as it stands.

If most major factions have large formations like a legion, you could have it printed on the banner.

I meant something like this (It's not an isometric view and yes, that a Uruk-Hai standard-bearer behind a Carthaginian Officer, but you get the idea):

There could be a mix of weapons and shield there (although i insist that shield+banner looks bad for some reason).

    Uh, and btw:

Slick.. I like it but I think it works more for the army than for the navy..IMO

I don't like it. The mod Europa Barbarorum implemented this idea on fleets and, the first thing I do when I install that mod, is to change the fleets back to vanilla.
Besides, it would look weird to see small soldiers and giant agents.

The one humanoid figure representation with a flag works quite well in my opinion, though I have to say I do like the visual of the tiny cohort on the map. I fear it would look very busy on the map if you had several armies together, though.

    I like the idea.
The giants walking around on the map are somewhat displaced imho. Sure they were in Rome and M2:TW also, but since Empire they look just hilarious. The new idea in the OP gives them a chess-piece look similar to STW1 or MTW1 where you actually felt like a general planning his moves in the headquarter.
