Hi, I am needing to upgrade my CPU as I have a Sempron64 3100 754skt at the moment. My motherboard has an extension slot for an AM2 socket add-on. I was wondering wether a dual core am2 processor would work on it or do you need a special m/b?

You have to look at the socket sizes and the motherboard compatibility.
A socket 754 will not work for a AM2. I haven't been keeping myself up to date but I think it is a socket 939.
And what do you need dual-core for? Running a office computer? I think single cores are still better for gaming but if someone can provide me with benchmarks roving me wrong please do!
OK, thanks I'll just get a single core AM2 then.
EDIT: Then again, wouldn't it be better to get a dual core for future compatability etc, plus won't games start coming out that take advantage of the two cores?
What I meant was that my 754skt board has a socket for an add-on. It takes both 939 and AM2 add-ons, the latter comming out very recently. This is what gave me the idea for the AM2 upgrade (if it's much better than 939). The prices are very good and I have noticed that there are single core and dual core AM2's available:A socket 754 will not work for a AM2. Single core
Dual core
The dual cores available seem more powerfull, but the single ones are much cheaper. Can any-one give me any advice as to which type I should get? I was looking at the 3800 of either core. Or should I spend a little more to get a longer lasting, more powerful one? If a 3800 can run Oblivion and games coming out in the near future well enough when coupled with a decent graphics card then I'll be happy.

But, witha bit overclocking, the lower end X2's perform almost as good as the faster ones. But I would recommend at least a 2.2, but never the less here is a good value X2 2GHz
Ifyou need to get a new mobo and are on a budgetthis is an absolute bargain, a X2 2.2 and a mobo for £235!

It SHOULD work. Check with the folks who made it.Hi, I am needing to upgrade my CPU as I have a Sempron64 3100 754skt at the moment. My motherboard has an extension slot for an AM2 socket add-on. I was wondering wether a dual core am2 processor would work on it or do you need a special m/b?

Well, if you are going with dual core and have any respect for money, then you should get the 3800+. It is 2GHZ, but it will overclock well.
3800 it is then, thanks. Found one for £8 cheaper!

Is it the same core though, or does that not make much difference?
EDIT:
I've just tested my memory on CPU-Z and it has come up with 152mhz even though it is ddr400. Is this very poor? If so do you recommend I get new memory and if so what? I was looking to double to 2gb anyway. I'm looking to spend around £80 or less for the memory. (It will need to be two sticks of 1gb as my m/b has only two slots).
