    Default Reading List

In anticipation of TWR2 and to further enhance my knowledge of the classical world I'd appreciate it if people could post a good list of ancient sources for me to read. Maybe some archeological studies as well.

Read Caesar's Campaigns books...it is probably the closest thing to Rome II you will get.

The rest is just philosophy and tragicomedies...

I just bought The Illiad and my wife does not believe it when I saw it was originally written 3000 years ago. Of course this is the English translation and not Homer's Greek.

As suggested before Ceasar's campaigns books. You could consider readering Polybius - the rise of te roman empire (that's what my edition is called).

It opens with the Punic war in 264 BC en ends with the final destruction of Cartage in 146 BC.

Herodotus and Thucydides are fantastic sources for classical Greece from The Persian wars up to the end of the Peloponnesian wars. For Rome I would recommend both Caesars campaigns and Polybius as above and also Suetonius and Tacitus for some good sources on the Empire period.

This is a good read. Not very academical, but simple and clear for people just discovering the Roman history.

I have a few good suggestions for you. Some which I am reading myself now and some that I am going to order in the near future:

The Jewish War: By Josephus (About the Jewish Revolt in AD 66) http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Jewish-W...9765438&sr=8-1

The History of the Peloponnesioan War: By Thucydides (Athenian General under the war): http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-History-...9&sr=1-1-spell

Julius Caesar's Books about his wars: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Julius-Caesa...0329694&sr=1-5

    Xenophon's The Persian Expidition: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Persian-Expe...words=Xenophon

    Xenophon's Conversations of Socrates: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Conversation...ref=pd_sim_b_7

    The Republic: By Plato: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Republic...ref=pd_sim_b_6

    On Sparta: By Plutarch: http://www.amazon.co.uk/On-Sparta-Pe...ref=pd_sim_b_4

The Rise and Fall of Athens: By Plutarch: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rise-Fall-At...ref=pd_sim_b_4

Livy's books on Rome from the founding by Romulus and Remulus to the reign of Augustus: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Livy/e/B001I...0329901&sr=1-1 (Now there's some good books to read for a time)

If you want to read some ancient greek plays check out Sophocles: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sophocles/e/...0330008&sr=1-3

The Campaigns of Alexander: By Arrian: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Campaigns-Al...s+of+alexander

The Annals of Imperial Rome: By Tacitus: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Annals-Imper...0330197&sr=1-1

Many of these books can get heavy to read, here's a light one: The Roman Civil War, The Alexandrian, The African War and the Spanish War: By Julius Caesar http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Civil-Wa...ref=pd_sim_b_7

Now most of what I posted is by Ancient Writers, which I prefer. Hope I helped out.

I suggest that you search online for historical books before buying them, many of them are available, all legal of course.

For example, before-mentioned Caesar's book about the Gallic war : http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Commen...the_Gallic_War

    Cheers.

Read Platon's Dialogues, that book will prepare you for war.

I would also recommend reading the Necronomicon, a book written in human blood on human skin and bound in human flesh got to be a good read!
