Default Do you ever move your capital?

As I get well-expanded on the map, and very far from my original capital, I tend to move it to a more central location. I'm not sure whether this does any good or not, so I thought I'd ask the wiser people on this forum what it does, if anything. And do you do it yourself?

Only really when you start getting the population happiness problems with settlements in the far-flung reaches of your empire, due to them being so far from the capital. I do like to have my capital city in the centre of my empire governed by my faction leader, but for the most part I don't change it.

Geography/history also tends to influence me too....making Venice the capital city of the Kingdom of Poland doesn't look or sound right

as JBfan says, its historically painful to see, say, venice as the capital of england or a respective faction, but there are great benefits to changing capitals:

new family members that come of age will spawn in said city

the "distance to capital" penalty will lower unrest (the closer to the capital, the less public disorder)

the closer to the capital, the less corrupt the cities' income is

the closer to the capital, the less corruption traits from generals

The only really bad thing is that the closer your merchants are to the capital, the less income they receive from merchant trade. this isnt really a big deal in Vanilla with the ****** merchant income, but in some mods, like darthmod, merchants are a vital linchpin to your economy, so moving the capital closer to the source can actually hurt your economy a lot.

That's a good one to know! Thanks.

Moving your capital to the center of your kingdom helps keep down the corruption. You can always move your capital around a bit to see which area gives you the best overall revenue. However moving your capital will also affect the value of your resources so you should also bear that in mind. For example, if you play the Byzantines and move your capital away from Constantinople it will certainly affect the lucrative silk trade from there.

This link should give you'all access to some good MTW II guides that can break down corruption, merchants, resources, etc. in detail.

    Hope that helps...

I move it from time to time. Most of the time I end up having the capital in either an underdeveloped city or an island.

I don't move it too often because I play mostly short campaigns, but when distance to capital becomes a problem for people's happiness, I change it's location accordingly with no hesitation.

I rarely move, only if I have expanded to a really huge empire.

I usually find (playing Kingdoms at any rate) that moving the capital increases income, especially if you move it to somewhere with a lot of trade potential. I always do it, it is an important part of city management.

TIP: are you about get a reward for achieving a goal e.g. "the council of so-and-so says they will reward you with some soldiers if you capture that city/kill that general" ??? Change your capital to the location where you want the soldiers to appear. Capture the city that gives the reward. The soldiers will appear at your new capital. Change the capital back to its normal location.

While playing Denmark in the Teutonic campaign, I moved my capital to Kalmar as soon as I had formed the Kalmar Union (unfortunately Copenhagen is not on the map, so I did that instead ) Moving my capital is something that I usually never or rarely do, though.

How exactly to you formally "move" your capital?

    Is this possible in vanilla?

Of course it's possible, you double-click on the city/castle you want to become your new capital, the settlement window will open, and at the bottom of that you'll see a "Show settlement details" button. Click on it, another window will pop up and there you have "Set this settlement to be your factions capital".

    Edit: Oh, too late, nevermind.

Depends on my faction but say if i'm England i tend to move my capital from London to Paris once i have it then onto a italian city such as Venice. It just seems to make sense to me as If England (scotland and wales too) are under your control and safe then you'll need your royal family on the mainland and fighting to expand your now Empire and an Empire deserves a central major city.
