    Spot on!

I haven't played TW since Empire (which I stopped playing very quickly) because the TW series simply wasn't advancing beyond producing prettier graphics. Much more effort seems to be put into making animations for the 3D battles and various other gimmicks than creating an AI which can give the human player a challenge - on either the campaign map or the battle map. Each new release seems to have an increasingly arcade feel about it, like it's targeted at being the flavour of the month for some casual gamer rather than a hardcore strategist. And the new releases come frequently too!

Ultimately, shiny graphics and gimmicks add very little to the long-term gameplay. (But they do, however, continually inflate the game's system requirements.) I want a Total War game that has a campaign side that can completely immerse me, with an AI that can challenge me. Each subsequent TW release has failed to create an AI that can properly manage the campaign map, which is a key part of the single player game. Can they not just make a re-polished version of the original MTW map, since the AI did a much better job in that game?

You missed Shogun II, because it was a completely different thing compared to Empire and Napoleon.

I didn't play Shogun II, but from what I've heard it still didn't include a functional AI.

It did. In fact it has the second best AI in the whole TW series, after Shogun 1/Medieval 1.

Certainly some good points, however the difficulty in a game like Shogun 2 gets pretty ridiculous; give that a try.

The series needs something new. I am thinking about a Crimean War or Franco-Prussian War game.

I voted for Great War era (written in the poll as WW1), although I am also in favour of Medieval III. And you left out quite many options, like Empire II which I am YEARNING for. Franco Prussian War can be depicted quite good, since it will be like Fall of the Samurai except that you won't have any old sword or spear wielding units.

I also support Medieval III. And I also want a Three Kingdoms Total War, based on the Three Kingdoms period of China after the fall of Han Dynasty. Even the Warring States period of China, which led to the founding of first Chinese Imperial Dynasty, the Qin Dynasty, will work fine.

A highly detailed fall of the Roman empire and Dark Ages. Call it something like Total War: Fall. Yeah It may sound cliche, but it's a cool title name.

If they make Victoria Total War then they'd be jumping around time frames too much and it would become inconsistant. It's better if they take their time and release titles in chronological order.

I would really like to see a Victoria, Thirty Years' War, or a Renaissance Total War.

i think they need competition, without mods their sales would drop fast.

it did include battles with full stacks that could run 100 miles per hour, hero units with abilities, rock paper siccors game play, and a whole host of problems new to tw.

if by improvement you mean more arcade like, ultra fast battles, rps gameplay, hero units etc than sure it made improvements, to me those all ruin games.

i know, i was trying to leave out ca's rocket launchers and units running from the sight of any gunpowder units, such as they currentley do in all ca games that allow gunpowder. Medevil is great warfare until gunpoder.

could not agree more, unless gunpowder is there from the start, such as ww2 or something.

Yes, that's absolutely what I mean. The series doesn't need better battlefield and campaign AI, improved unit discipline mechanics, or actual impacts for stamina and armor, it definitely needs those things I've never said anything about.

I will agree that Total War has a lot of room to make improvement, especially off the battlefield, but the series did move forward with Shogun 2 and Rome 2 looks quite promising with the developments made off the battlefield.

Hopefully, with some of the hardware advancement we will be seeing to coincide with the next generation of consoles, CA will be able to fully flesh factions with greater depth on the campaign map. I think CA could learn a great deal from Paradox on that front, even though the work Paradox does wouldn't carry over to turn based gameplay 1:1, it's still a great starting point for examining things that could be added.

For example, in my suggested "Total War : Khan" it would just feel silly to have the Mongol tribes function the same way on the campaign map as the HRE or Japan, which should operate under their own unique forms of feudalism. Ideally, this would generate some sort of significant internal politics to manage, perhaps which would be better used to handicap AI instead of the more common magic unit generation and upgrades to grind through.

Next TW should be a Post-apocalyptic setting.

Starting Date: 2071 (right after the nuclear holocaust)
