Default Steam is the RTW2 deal-breaker - here is why

Steam is the TWR2 deal-breaker for me. In the recent Poll here ONE THIRD of the responders voted for non-Steam.

Here are my reasons for voting for non-Steam:

    1) I don't like to give companies an after-sales backdoor into my wallet
    2) I don't want a storefront on my desktop
    3) I do not support unethical companies like Valve (they sell email addresses to 3rd party direct marketing brokers)
    4) I don't want to have to be connected to the net
    5) I don't trust their security (http://arstechnica.com/security/2012...alicious-code/)
    6) I don't want anything running in the "background" potentially collecting my usage information with the intend to sell it to internet marketing brokers
    7) I really don't want to give the founder a single penny, same reason I don't watch Tom Cruise movies.

It must be a considerable business risk for CA to have such a close partnership with $team. What if they have to close down shop due to, for example, a law suit? Valve Sued by German consumer group

The Modding Tools for Warscape requires you to launch Steam before you can use them.

Correction maths, 31% is not half, it's barely 1/3.

LOL - of course. I'll correct that now and seek a refund on my tuition fees since 1981

Do so That's some money your education institutions owe you.

I can appreciate your concerns with steam, never liked it also due to the problems with signing in/slow as hell internet, but it sorta became a necessary evil when there aren't that many local stores that stock games that are close to where i live. Importing from overseas is out of question either with the unfavourable exchange rate+shipping fees.

Get Unifi man... Since MYR is stronger than USD it's actually much cheaper buying games than on retail. Though of course I still buy retail just to support local companies.

TM said not available at my place yet, bummer. Well, Melaka has no retail shops for me to go to. Given the okay-rate i'm getting from public bank for my purchases via debit card, i chose to go to sites like GMG/Gamersgate/Getgamesgo instead, but still have to end up with steam, somehow or rather, no escaping it.

You're so right. Origin is a terrible platform, steam is ok.

Let me rephrase that 2nd sentence for ya:

In the recent Poll here ONE THIRD of the 332 TWCENTER responders voted for non-Steam.
In no way, shape or form does the poll represent the entire Total War fanbase, nor represent the newcomers to the series.

And if the majority truly didn't like Steam, this wouldnt've happened: http://games.on.net/2013/05/total-wa...-order-record/

    Steam a deal-breaker? I think it's the opposite.

CA/SEGA have been using Steam since Empire. They have been very successful with it. They will use it for Rome 2 and will continue to use it in the future. This will NOT change. There have been many threads on this topic but they are all pointless given that IT WILL NOT CHANGE and the threads always descend into a lot of nasty bickering. Steam has been a requirement of the series for several years now and this WILL NOT CHANGE. It's time to either swallow your pride and use it, or simply move on.

Unlikely. Empire was the first game to require Steam and it instantly became the best selling title in the series. Last year, despite no major release, SEGA announced over two million franchise sales. Rome 2 has had over six times the pre-orders than S2 did already, and given that it's been in the Top Seller list on Steam since it was made available, I'd bet a lot of them come through that service. Steam offers many advantages to developers and publishers, but I'm not going to get drawn into the pros vs cons argument because I see no point. We've walked this ground a dozen times before.

FACT: Rome 2 requires Steam. Use it, or don't. Complaining about it now several months after the announcement is completely redundant. If, however, you want to talk about the Steam requirement for FUTURE TW titles, or just Steam in general, then I'd suggest taking it to the General TW or General games discussion.

I haven't - it would cost me more in lost time than the games cost, so not worth it.

Of course it's my own fault. I can't even remember the username and I have tried to contact Steam in the UK. No cigar, since I can't prove that the email was mine. In fact, they didin't even want to look into it.

oki you are contradict yourself so much that its not even funny.
Please note this is not a personal attack. but only attempt to find out why steam is evil! and why Rome 2 should be steam free.

But please understand, if those games meant nothing for you what would stop you from activating it. on a new steam account with rome 2.
and all the paranoia about privacy. what would they learn about you?

-the new Email you made only for steam and nothing ELSE with Fake name osv. osv.
-you can play the game offline. (I have rarely had problem with it. it use to be the game it self and not steam)

If there is no steam, I wont buy this game. Simply put there is no other way to purchase pc games in brazil outside steam.

A game doesn't have the absolute need to run it with steam in order to be sold at steam. I don't think one possibility must exclude the other.

you mean they are going to sell a non steam version on one of the most piracy heavy countries in the world? We only have console stores here, software? get directly from publisher.

and drm doesnt work, not even steam is 100% secure, doesnt mean that while it doesnt work that it wont be enforced. And dont say witcher.

while one doesnt preclude the existence of the other, it adds unnecessary costs to the whole process, and dont say we can do without drm, thats not going to happen as well.

Steam games are pirated just as much as other- They offer a good platform to sell and host the game. But they don't give much in piracy protection.
I think CA reason something like this.
    Steam is good
    Steam is convinent
    Steam is efficient
    Everybody have and use steam.

No, they're not going to spend time making a non-steam version of the game.
