Icon4 A personal appeal to all MTW2 players.

    Hello Total War players,

Today I write you to humbly beg you to try the many mods we have in our forums, I'm not doing this in anyone's favour, rather, I'm doing this as a player and as a Medieval II fan.

We have a huge list here in our forums with lots of different mods, all worked hard by our fellow modders (I'm not one, I'm just a player) whom put a lot of efforts to make us these incredibly good mods, which some we already know and play. Most of us already know Stainless Steel or Third Age, but that is exactly the problem, we all know SS and TA, they are for some of us, the best mods available, but they are not the only mods out there.

There are lots of other great mods, of all kinds and fashion, there are fantasy mods with mighty Orcs and agile Elves, there are pagan and Viking mods, there are Roman mods and mods focusing on feudalism, mods with new fantasy factions, new trade, war and economical systems, new maps, new factions, new units, new accents, new banners, new duties and schemes. Early, High and Late, as well as Renaissance period, we have so many mods we can't even dare mention all of their features in this honest thread.

And saying again, that is the problem, Vanilla is great, SS and TA is great, but I'm sure all here would equally enjoy trying a new experience and awesome mods, our fellows who designed those mods put a great deal of time, efforts and sweat on those mods, all for us, for free, and these things aren't easy to make, and it saddens me deeply to see so many great mods left for dead in our Kingdoms section, which even the own creator team leaves and forget, because no one cares about it, no one even bothers to try it.

So let us pay our respect to them and at least try those different mods we see here, so we make their hard working time at least worth the effort, so we can all enjoy and have fun, as players and modders alike, as Total War brothers.

You can find a list of all Kingdoms mods and sub forums clicking here.

    With kind regards,
    Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert,
    Medieval II player.

Moderation: I know this is a thread focused on mods and such, but please, don't close or lock this thread, this is here since it doesn't refer to any mod in special, and this is meant for the great mass of M2 players, which gather here at our General Discussion board, and specially to those whom only know vanilla so far. Thank you for understanding.

Nice of you to do that my friend. It's sad that you see all these great mod forums being empty, except for some random new players. But the reason SS in my opinion has more players is not because it has better units maps or anything..But better AI...It really makes a challenge for the player.I have not played much TA but I've heard it has good AI as well. Most of the other mods, use the vanilla AI which is really boring and stupid.ReallyBadAi fixes the problem but only in terms of battle. The campaigns are still too easy to be enjoyable in the majority of the mods.I'd love there were more of them though with a challening campaign, since the modders have done an excellent job in all of them.

I think the question all remains, can you install, many different mods at once? I really want Third Age, game of thrones and stainless steel installed. Do they all work together?

They do!I am sure about Stainless Steel and Third Age!game of thrones(westeros tw?) must be like this too...Actually in M2TW nearly every mod is mod-foldered,which means its files are located in the mods folder in the game directory,so you can run vanilla,or any other mod you have without intefering with each other.

Indeed there might be some very good mods that are probably unknown or even buried somewhere in the Released mods section. For example Bellum Crucis seems to be a very good mod.

Well, but regardless of the AI, some mods are better for being different itself, and can be quite challenging too. But really thanks for the support!

Yes, you can! Each Kingdom's mod has it's own folder, but it must be a Kingdom's mod.

Well, I didn't know, where are they?

And yes, a lot of mods are mod foldered and can be played separately without one interfering with another. I personally have 2 different SS's, BC and THERA installed as submods.
Thanks! But don't thank me! Go and play some mods mate!

I had the same feeling before, but then I learnt, you don't need to modify anything or fear your game to be overwritten by mods, no, just install them and each one has it's own folder, you can play any at any time and even Vanilla (raw game, without mods).

I like The Wrath of the Norsemen a lot, the only problem it is still beta.

Thank you for the support, but there is no better way to thank me than trying those mods, so the modders feel motivated and create even more mods for us to play. And if you like you can give me rep! Speaking of which, this is my 1000th post, so congratulate me with reps... Haha.

Well, as Giumbix pointed out, there's the Released mods section, and I think (not sure, never tried any of them) Medieval II hosted mods work with Kingdoms too. It'd be good if we had a thread where we'd have all the mods categorized in one list. This is the closest one I know besides the wiki page that just lists the hosted mods, but it only has small mods and hasn't been updated in years.

    Nice thread Sir Brian.

After playing the vanilla games, it's the mods that keep me playing the game years later. The variety of themes makes for completely different games too, even though based on the same basic game.

If you're afraid of wrecking your vanilla installation, then you can just copy the whole game folder to some other location as a spare/back up. Then go ahead and install whatever mods ... if it breaks your game then you can just delete the M2TW folder and replace it with the one you copied.

Part of the problem is that most of the more scripted mods outside of of SS and TA rend to crash a lot. I love DHHR to bits but it's a bit unstable and neds a mod to enable custom battles.

indeed, there are some great mods out there. I'd recommend the Last Kingdom for dark ages britain, that's pretty fun... Warcraft Total War is still very much incomplete, but the map is completely re-done, so that's fun. Thera: Legacy of the Great Torment has a great new world, although I find it crashes on me a lot.

    Sir Brian,

Your banner caught my eye and I am reading this thread for the first time, and I heartly agree with the sentiment of your original post. I love M2TW and the modders have really made a Game+ the likes of which my mind strains to find anything comparable. When I think of the great value the mods bring to M2TW, it makes me laugh that so many companies are patting themselves on the back for releasing DLC when they should just create some tools for the modding community and then get the hell out of the way.

Your message should be spread Sir Brian!

I need an advice for a mod with very high mountains/rough terrain; new pikemen animations, and these with the long axes. And new battlemap cities, towns, castles etc. Also some new stratmap animations would be nice, like for marriage etc.

Having worked on RS2 for so many years, I never had time to check out M2TW or its mods very much. However, since finishing RS2.6 I've just taken a bit of break and downloaded a few....and I must say, there is more content and thought in these mods than I will ever get out of Rome2 (which is, well.....not worth mentioning).

I find the idea behind the OP commendable, but I have to ask: do you think that TWC is not promoting M2TW mods enough? I think Hex does everything to accommodate modders and that the Content Staff is very diligent in promoting their work. Is there something TWC could or should do more? It would be interesting to hear some ideas on this.
