How strong will be slingers?

Archers wer more popular and they shoot more distance. However, slingers were very strong. They could kill enemy warriors without problems.
Power os slinger first known by Assyrians. Assyrian army had regular units of slingers. There are many sources with them in Assyrian art. Assyrian slingers had heavy armors and helmets.
In time of Rome 2 were many mercenaries of slingers. They were popular in some armies, especially Balearic slingers - Carthaginian Wars. In that period slingers were light units.
Do you think they will be strong units in Rome 2? Maybe faster than archers?

One advantage slingers have over archers is they can replenish their ammo by simply picking up rocks off the floor.

Well, what were really scary at the time were roman slingers using small lead weights as projectiles. They apparently had a ton of range and had enough force to get imbedded in your skin.

Wouldn't slingers be kind'a hard to catch if they were in Skirmish mode with elephants?
(assuming their AI doesn't go full retard, which can often happen in TW games)

I always imagined that slingers would be able to outrun everyone but the cavalry or other really fast light units.

I quite liked slingers in Rome 1, they had a good role alongside archers. I'd like to see more armored slingers too however, that are equipped for melee combat. Might be an interesting unit to toy with. First throw stones, and then stand their ground for a melee against the weakened remains of the approaching enemy.

Exactly, thats why I proposed it, in the first game slingers were able to fling as far as archers were able to shoot. Thats why I said it.

I'd love to see slingers in game, at least as a low-tech, early game unit. SgtHunter's idea could be implemented if they could go into a mode in which they stop firing, are very vulnerable to pretty much everything, but they can start scouring the ground for ammo. Terrain-based factors for how successful that is could be pretty awesome. Although, I have the feeling that most the ideas we TWC people bring up have little to no influence on what the game is going to be like. Anyway, even having slingers in game would be cool.

Slingers were far more effective than the most people seems to think. It is a very cheap but extremly effective weapon and specially in the western mediterranean area, the most used range weapon (if you exclude javellins, which have a extrem short range). The western cultures didn't used the Bow in larger Numbers as a Combat weapon and the Bows and Arrows probably weren't as much dangerous and effective than the eastern pendents. Slingers smash bones and skulls very effective and were used until the romans occupied everything in the west. The romans didn't used Archers and Slingers in larger numbers and so their military use stopped in the west.

Further Range is compared to the Bow not a problem. 300 Meters can easily achieved. 400 Meters is possible.

Slinger is fine as in RTW. Their range is a little shorter than archer but their damage output is far greater.
But there's 1 point I dislike about slinger that they can headshot your own troops like piece in the cake,after they retreat back behind infantry line and begin shooting again.
