Default Is Rome the faction over powered?

not sure if you guys remember rome in the first game, or the mods after it but in my opinion Rome was always too over powered, they would steam roll over everyone else on the campaign map and if you did not kill them quickly, you could easily be over powered by their endless legions.. i hope the factions are a little more balanced during rome 2. what do you guys think?

I expect them to be powerful in the battlefield, though remember they are this time just one faction and not three (plus the Senate), so I expect them to be way more limited in the recruitment of legions and on their ability to expand and hold land. I wouldn't worry too much, though.

As a matter of fact in most mods I've played with a faction different from Rome the Romans barely manage to crawl out of Italy. God forbid they anger the Carthaginians, the results are brutal

I think it'll be balanced this time around. Remember that the Teutoberg Forest battle was doctored so the narrator could actually win.

The game hasn't been released yet, how are we suppose to know if they are overpowered?

I hope the Romans are powerful and will be victorious over the other factions but not as quickly as in the first game. Facing a giant barbarian kingdom or hellenic faction just isn't the same as fighting a giant Roman empire.

In RTR VII it's the Gauls that usually expand the fastest. At least they do in my campaigns. If you play as Rome on VH/VH is can be very hard to defeat the Epirote army in Italy and conquer all the Southern territories.

It was in RTW1 , immune cohorts to almost everything you threw them.
At least the mods did balance things

If i need to choose beetween a weak rome owning two provinces in italy, and a rome a little overpowered i prefer the second.
Of couse i hope for a balanced thing, but the roman army deserve is reputation, so i think not should be rare see a conquering rome.

I don't think the Romans are over powered to say the least and with everyone saying historical accuracy not that. Im saying you are but if you do then the Romans should be the most powerful army in the game. Plus the Romans are the Romans the best trained and fighting army of its time the early republican army wasn't like the imperial army so there would be the time to attack Rome when there not the most powerful army. If you play mods like Roma Surrectum which i would say is accurate the army when you begin is very under powered particularly destroyed after some battles especially against Carthaginians.

Honestly as long as we don't have an Egypt conquering half the map, I'll be fine with whatever Rome throws at me.

In RTW the most over powered faction I've played against is the Germans when playing as the Gauls on VH/VH. So you start out fighting the Germans, British, spanish, and Romans. Most factions are pretty easy, sure British chariots are annoying. But the Germans have those bloody spear warbands. Your own infantry can't reach them at all. And yes I flank them, I mob them but they won't rout. It takes 3-4 warbands to defeat one spear warband even with flanking and engulfing! So ther Germans most basic troops is over powered. Early on they have one enemy, Gaul so they ca easily expand. The Germans obtain everything north of the apps quite rapidly. Not only that but late game they get berserkers!!! The Romans on the other hand are fairly easy to deal with because the separate factions don't support eachother very much.

I don't agree entirely. They're certainly the most well funded and most numerous of armies. Yet they have so many defeats in straight up battles against many factions, and were outclassed on many occasions. Their main strength was their ability adapt and take strengths from other cultures and add it to their own, and to come back for more over and over again until the enemy had nothing left to fight them with. I'm not disputing they're power and how highly trained their Legions were, but there's a lot of impressive warrior cultures and armies of this time, and Rome took strengths from all of them to overcome them.

So I'm not worried about Rome, unless they manage to expand rapidly and keep advancing in power, and make some key alliances or good diplomatic relations to prevent being overwhelmed. I think they are going to be very difficult to fight once they accumulate enough wealth and man power, as they had in real history. Early on though, I think they're going to have a very difficult time because they're surrounded on all sides by some dangerous enemies; professional and powerful Carthage just south of them, powerful warlike Barbarian tribes just north of them, with prestigious Macedonian and Greek nations just east - that's not a starting position to be envious of.

    I'm voting for the option:
    - They're dangerous, but can be defeated on the battlefield with the right planning.

Not sure about Rome in Rome 2, but Rome in Rome 1 was properly powerful. They could hit you quickly with a lot of force, mostly due to them being four factions, three functioning normally and one having a massive powerful army and Rome itself.

I'm playing a Carthage campaign on hard in RTW right now and I destroyed the Scipii and took over Rome relatively early. Brutii are banished into Greece, and the Julii are coming at me hard right now so it's not over, but taking Rome before 250 BC and doing so without that much trouble definitely doesn't sound overpowered.

In Rome 2, fighting Rome should be the hardest thing to do for any faction that would fight them at their height. Rome did, after all, conquer almost every faction annou
