Default How to play as mordor

I would love to hear a guide on how to play as Mordor. I do well as the other factions but when I play as mordor I constantly run out of money even when I focus only on money buildings. Any advice to help me conquer Middle-Earth as mordor without going bankrupt?

I haven't seen any that cover the long-game, but Alaeron posted a very good introcutory guide for the first few plays/ strategy as Mordor on VH/ VH.

Here is a (link) to his guide.

Not a written guide, but a video "Let's Play" series by SurrealBeliefs:

Well worth watching as he covers both the strategic and the tactical part of the game. Plus it's quite enjoyable

And ye gods, don't try and turtle as them. I did, and paid for it in spades.

Also, curiously, i found the most difficult armies i had to face were Dale's. Their love of Archers combined with Cavalry meant my largely foot melee units were either getting taken out at range or being charged by horse. Dwarves were nasty because of high AC, but i could send ranged against them. Even Gondor's armies were easier for some unknown reason.

In the end i had to bring Nazgul and Trolls into play to deal with Dale effectively.

    Lesson learned, don't underestimate Dale.

Its impossible to effectively turtle as a horde faction

Take Loki's words with the whole salt shaker, he speaks the truth! An late game Dale is horrible for Morder and any army without cavalry, so make sure you give Rhun some support, maybe like a half stack of cheap units (to work alongside a rhun army) to keep Dale from expanding. I know it may sound impossible, but I've done it as Isengard

Olog Hai will mixed with halberds will take care of almost any dwarven unit, but you'll need the nazgul to take out the elves, they are your only cavalry. And whatever you do, don't keep any generals in cities, all orc generals do are gain bad traits and besides, you'll need them to stop your units from routing.

Since there's guides for early game, that's all I can think of that is crucial to late game. You might end up fighting Isengard depending on how well they do agaisnt Rohan. I don't have any tips there except to outproduce them

    Hello everyone!
I have been playing the Total War Series for quite a while (hundreds of hrs on Rome and Medieval 2 ) but I'm new to this forum.
Like other people mentioned, #1 thing to remember is do NOT turtle! You need more settlements to get more income, and for that you to expand as quickly as possible.
The best settlements for income (i.e. most developed cities/castles) close to you belong to Gondor. I would recommend you go all-out on them as soon as possible.

    use the Nazguls

Their command stats, dread stats and their fear-related special abilities make them great to rout enemy armies. No army without a general inside can withstand them, they will flee in mass in front of them, especially the WK; if they have general, your first goal, when possible, should be to kill him and then use fear special abilities (coupled with flanking for the best effect) to rout them.

they will be the only cavalry units you'll have and for the first part of the campaign they will also be the only effective flanking unit (until you get trolls), they already have traits/ancillaries which give them extra Hps; they have not great charging bonuses, but very good attack and excellent defence, which means they work very good in charging and can handle quite everything in melee, only avoid heavy lancers, halberdiers, pikemen and other similar units.

with MOS, Mordor is a walk in the park, as you will have 9 nazguls, to be split in two armies (I usually use 4 in one army, 4 in another and leave Kamhul to take care of Mordor northern regions); give them cannon fodders (I usually pack up as much archers as I can, they serve perfectly in this purpose and plus can shot some arrows) and when you can add some better unit (morannon guards, dismounted numenoreans) use them as back up to fill the gaps in your battle line or to face/flank the best enemy units. Trolls and later Ologs will become your extra flanking units, when you'll have enough of them you can divide again your Nazguls (2+2+2+2) and give them 2-4 units of them each army.

by using this tecnique you'll have two effective armies since the beginning, and you can keep the pressure on Gondor without need to stop, as long as you will keep sending meatshield troops (that you can recruit quite everywhere)

truly, Nazgul are powerful, if you learn how to use them properly and exploit their special abilities, you won't even need to wait for trolls to steamroll ME

I remember playing 1.4 with RR/CC and had the 9 nazgul in a single army. It was a cakewalk. You could enter the battlefield, use your abilities, and enemy armies would just rout before combat had even ensued. Glad its not that OP anymore.

Mega's Third Age of Turtles: A guide to Turtling

It covers the basics including getting set up as Mordor. I haven't had the chance to flesh it out yet, but the main points should help you. With Mordor, you can get more from less thanks to the power of the Nazguls. You can also use generals as city governors, though it takes careful micromanaging... Use diplomacy to let Gondor-Harad knock each other sensless while you concentrate on killing Da Elves.
