I really loved the senate in the first Rome and the pope system in M2 but what about you guys? there will obviously be senate missions but what else do you want the senate to do and try to either help or stifle you (and your family)?

It should be based on your faction leader or family if there is no emperor or king. There will always be a number that do not like you or are friendly to your family/leader due to political rivalry's and friendships but if you play the game and keep enough allies you should not worry to much. If you like you or give them to much power they'll piss you off.

I want them to be nice and annoying so I won't have any qualms about destroying them later. I wouldn't mind seeing cutscenes about in a senate meeting that changes depending on how much they like you. Maybe there will even be assasination type events in which senators kill or arrest another senator or you see guards drag another away like in the live action trailer.
I hope I can abolish the Senate within the first turn, end the Republic and make my family the Kings of Rome.

HAHA, back in the days, even Gaius Marius & Julius Caesar dare not to do sth like that. The only logical consequence should be having multiple senators hiring numerous assassins to go after you. Probably your family members will turn against you too. Before Marian reform, I do not think anyone can have a legion without the senate's consent. So... what do we got here? Mercenary army vs the whole Roman republic legions ~ ~? Guess what will happen.
If I am not mistaken, the Senate controlled the national treasury of Rome. They are the only entity that permits raising of army in peace. In order to be historical accurate, maybe the player need to consult the senate to raise an army. The player should not be able to pick who the general is unless it is the current consul. The player will need the senate's approval to declare war. The senate will determine the tax rate etc..
However, historical accurate =/= fun. I would rather have the senate to be an independent entity which has its own view on every matter. If the player does sth, civil/legal/military etc., against its will, your popularity among the senate will drop. If it drops under a certain level, your faction leader will get assassinated. If it further drops to a lower level, civil war will take place to overthrow the player's house. If the player follow the senate's mission, performing those tasks will cost no $. Hopefully players will have means to influence the senate to change the composition of senators. Players should be able to pass law and adjust tax rate. Holding a triumph though should need approval from the senate so players cannot skyrocket their popularity and ignore the senate after 1 or 2 victories.
CA said there will be internal politics, I do wonder if they will go so far to implement an AI to be the other consul to veto the player's action, forcing the player to keep a good relationship with the other 2 big families. What if civil really happened, and the player's house got overthrown, should the game end?? What if the player win, should we be able to arrest and kill senators as we wish, like Lucius Cornelius Sulla? Interesting indeed.
Never argue with an idiot, cuz they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience

How dare you! You, you and you. Long live the Republic. If it's even possible to declare yourself King of Rome, CA should add enormous rebellions. Romans hated their Kings. The first Emperor, Augustus, was called Princeps Senatus instead of Rex.
The Kings didn't survive, the Emperors didn't survive, but the Senate survived! It's power should not be underestimated.
Please, CA, in my humble opinion, do not import the politicans and their intrigues and corruption from movies into your games. Let us put some effort in making the Senators glad to support us.
Sic semper tyrannis
It would be nice if Senate caused enough trouble that sometimes campaign would need to be suspended or a general recalled or even certain technologies or foreign alliances rejected. I'm not as sure about missions or ordering objectives but more as a spoiler or reactionary brake on expansion or ambitious foreign entanglements. The best would be that the senate influences general's skill progression to some extent. IE authorizing triumphs or assumption of certain titles which give some bonus or denying a too successful general with the next promotion and delaying or resetting a general's XP level a bit. Charges of treachery or dereliction of duty in face of retreat might be interesting occasionally but shouldn't be a regular feature.

ah.. the senate, and equivalents, could be used to add some really good things to the game. It's function should basically be to slow down whatever the player, as consul or something, is doing. There ought to be a pro with trumphing the senate. It could also add much realism if it represents the reasons not to go to war that the player can never feel, like warexhastion, or that they simply don't want to be bothered with the hassle of conquering new lands and keeping them orderly, as compared with the player whose goal often is to just conquer everything. And going against their wishes should have serious consequences, if it should even be possible at all.
I don't want them too be too annoying. I want to expand as I see with without the senate interrupting me. Don't know how I would balance that though and still make the Senate interesting. I do hope though that fighting for a position in the Senate for a family member will have more meaning than it did in the first game.
Who dares wins
The thing i want to see in Rome II about the Senate and Diplomacy, is real-time interaction. I mean that you will be able to see their facial expressions, try to analyze them as it might be able to deceive you etc. These kind of small details will make Rome II unique and it will set a milestone for every other strategy game out there. In CA, we trust !!!![]()
Ha! I am not afraid of the Senate and its effeminate minions!
They are like small, unimportant insects to my dreadful Empire!
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I love the Republic so i think i'll have to be patient.
There should be consequences for doing as they say or not doing it. It should be a new and exciting part of the campaign map. By new I mean they should be massively important. Giving you bonuses and money if they like you. This would make each play through with the saem faction pretty cool.
One Punch Man Series VS My Hero Academia Series - Who's Better?
The senate was important as you could earn valuable resources and lands not to mention their support before declaring them war.
I think the Senate should be able to open and close the purse strings of the treasury, as it could historically. I think they should generally direct you with regards to foreign contact, like they did in Rome 1, and be able to sanction you if you decide to continually disregard them. Demoting your family members and generals, or even causing them to change loyalties to a rival house would be interesting. Recalling and retiring generals(and their armies) to Rome is also a possibility.
They should reward and honor you if you complete their missions sufficiently enough that overthrowing them and declaring the empire isn't a no-brainer every time. I want Empire/Republic to be a real choice with pro's and con's on each side. I want there to be benefits for playing the politics game instead of just ignoring the Senate and doing whatever you want to.
I would like the senate to have the historical role and power,s it enjoyed during the time of the Roman Republic.
Plenty of power politic,s would enliven Rome II and its gameplay.

I want the Senate to be a restraint on the Player and to loosely guide their efforts. Now whether the Player chooses to bend to the will of the Senate is absolutely up to the Player. If the Senate is ignored or pushed too far the Player should risk recall and trial. That's when a Civil War would commence. If the Player is an honorable son of Rome and generally obeys the will of the Senate there should be rewards.
