I do not think that playing the spartans will be that hard. I do not think that campaign AI will perform great naval invasions in Rome II. Given this, you only have to fight at one front the most time when you are expanding in greece. Because there is no land in the south of peloponnes as the peninsula in greece ends there. You will always fight at one front where you can concentrate your troops.

On the other side, if the AI is able to perform great naval invasions over a long time, Sparta might get trouble, but to be honest I do not think that this will happen even I know that Rome II will be a great game.

The Spartiates are endlessly fascinating - the hubristic, aristocratic military-citizenry par excellence. The so-called Spartan myth paints them as stubbornly principled military totalitarians, fixed in their ways and laws; but modern scholarship shows them as more wily and pragmatic than that. Of course, for a total war game not to include the total citizen warrior would be a tad contradictory.

They are utterly stubborn in one respect: their great failure after Leuctra is that they can never accept the loss of Messenia and this hinders any attempt at Greek City unity in the face of Macedon's strength. Of course, you cannot blame them for wanting to reclaim their birthright (as they saw it) - to reconquer the lands bequeathed to them by their fathers.

Anyway, as I like to joke, the Spartans win this game in round one because they start with Messenia and the whole Peloponnese already under their control. From a Spartan POV this is the perfect start and the perfect end ;-)

Indeed and as I ve said with my former statement, Sparta will be a really difficult campaign.Even if they are supposed to have some defensive bonuses in the game
