Re: Can't open preferences when launching r2, what to do?
First of all welcome to TWC.
The preferences file will not be present until you've launched a campaign.
However, if you installed RSII onto a 'working copy of R:TW' (as the install instruction suggest) then your 'donor' install will already have this file (as you've launched the game and hopefully started a vanilla R:TW campaign to verify that it is indeed a 'working copy'). If you've done that then this file will be copied by the game into the sub-folders for each campaign.

Thanks for reply and welcome
This is the message that I get when trying to edit RS2 preferences: Unable to open file `C:\Program Files (86)\The Creative Assembly\Rome Total War\preferences\preference.txt`

Re: Can't open preferences when launching r2, what to do?
OK, so you can actually see it?
It could be one of several things
1) is the file marked as 'read-only'? Right mouse click it and select properties - even if it's shown as read-only you should be able to open it just not save it
2) your Windows account (either a specific one or the default one) does not have administrator rights (usually the only reason to have a non admin account is if you share a PC)
3) it may be something to do with User Account Control (UAC). I usually turn this down to it's lowest setting on a PC install
4) something else....

Yes I can see it and i can play Rs2 and everything. I tried your ideas but unfortunately it didn`t work. Does it have something to do that I have installed it under programfiles (86)?, just a longshoot.

Re: Can't open preferences when launching r2, what to do?
It's best to install games away from the program files folders (if you have a 64 bit version of Windows there will be two of them). I had this advice given to me when Vista first came out and have followed it ever since on various PCs. I've also installed Steam away from these folders. The main thing is that Windows sees these folders as 'protected'.
We do advise this in the instal intructions.
I would have thought that this would mean that you could open the files but not save them there. Not being able to open them to me implies a problem with permissions (which is where the admin rights suggestion came from).
I'd install away from the program folders (after uninstalling and removing all traces of the game) and then seeing what happens. The thing to do is create a folder for your games and install them all there. I have my own program files folder (I just put my initials in front). This may solve your problems but I'm not 100% sure that this is the only problem. Sometimes it's best to remove the chance of certain things going wrong so you can identify the real problem......

Re: Can't open preferences when launching r2, what to do?
I finally got it to work. I installed rW vanilla in another map, and after installing rs2 I installed the alexander expansion. Somehow it did the trick. Thanks for your help and awesomw mod
