Default Collector's Edition worth the money?

    What you get:
    • Kit to construct a roman onager
    • Limited edition steelbook
    • Set of dice and roundels + the box which also functions as a game board
    • exclusive card set
    • campaing map on canvas
    • not to forget it is the collector's edition of ROME 2

    What you pay: 129,99 EUR

It's limited to a quantity of 22.000 - so I estimate a 'cost of goods' of maximum 15 EUR. But let's say it's around 20 EUR. even then its a sixth of the sales price per unit.
For me a fair price would be around 89,99 to 99,99, but 129,99 looks really over-the-top for me. Is it greed? Am I the only one not seeing the value of it being that high?

I dont think so.... a small onager, some dices and play cards, a steel box for 130 euros?

    Not in my opinion

Then don't buy it, it's a collector's edition, it's not supposed to be cheap or "value"; it's for those that would spend even 200€ to get it.

Can you get those items somewhere else besides the game? If not and you like this stuff get the collectors edition.

But there is always a limit where it gets a rip-off. I'm a real TW fan, had no Coll.Ed. of a TW-game before to be honest but would really look forward to have it for R2. I could afford it, but in my opinion its a rip-off. Do you want to get ripped-off?

I'm exactly the same. Never had a collectors edition for a Total War game. I took the plunge in the end and ordered it. I figure if I'm let down by it, then I just won't get one again and stick to standard editions in the future.

I think the price is a bit over the top, but they'll sell the units so it's hard to blame them. I mean it looks like a nice neat set. I'll be irritated if Game don't get it to me for release date though. That would definitely invoke angry phone calls!

There are games worth spending money on it. I can definitely say this is the case. I made the same with NTW and ETW.

I remember when games used to come with added bits in the box as standard. As I recall for example, Lords of the Realm originally shipped with an entire book on the history of medieval England as a free bonus. Most of the cheap crap that comes with "collectors editions" these days is pretty disappointing. If they'd thrown in something useful like a printed copy of Caesar's commentaries, I'd have bought it without a second thought, but a toy onager? Really? Come on...

Depends. Is the onager made of genuine wood and natural materials, or is it just plastic?
Are the dice made of real bones - like the Mongolian dice which is made from goat ankles - or just plastic?
Is the card game just tacked on, or actually fun?

I think that they said the onager would be made out of wood etc.

Absolutely not, in my opinion at least.

I never saw the point, given that you won't even need a disc once it's installed.

    But, whatever floats your boat.

I guess 130 bucks is a bit over the top.

But still better than a Collectors edition with 2 super special exclusive in-game weapon upgrades, 20000 denare and the unique hillmen of hobbington unit at only 89,99!

I really like what's included in the collector's edition, but I don't think the value is there, so I'll be passing.

    Not in the slightest

Totally agree, that would have been brilliant. A small statue of Alexander prancing with Bucephalus would have been cool too.

    But oh well

My HONEST opinion of any game's Collector's Edition:
If you like to buy in addition to the 50 bucks game a regular 10 bucks statue with the games brand on it - the brand itself being another 40 bucks - all this basically doubling the product's value, please, go ahead!
But now, honestly, if you buy a game to play it, do you play with the little statue or stare at it while you are playing the game? It's nice to be a fan but collector's edition? What, do you have to "catch them all"? Buying the game doesn't mean just that? Honestly, I'd save the extra money to buy all the DLCs - it's way more worth it.
But of course, if you are a very hardcore fan and have the money for it, nobody stops you man. But then again, you wouldn't ask us if it is a good idea if you were so.

Months after AC3 was released, I could still find collector's edition boxes filling store shelves. Same with Mists of Pandaria.

You know what is funny with that: they can't drop the prices on them because they also had to buy them at ridiculously high ones and they just keep them there hoping for someone to buy them even if everyone already owns the game and probably is even bored by it now.
