    Default Doom of Valaryia Theory

I was just reading theories about the doom and thought of this one, just wondering what others think of it.

So i was thinking that perhaps the Others/Whitewalkers were behind the doom. Consider this, they wake from the thousands of years long sleep and realize this massive Empire has risen to power in there absence, far more powerful than the first men and the children of the forest, for they have dragons, magic and dragon steel (Valyrian Steel?). I mean what use is an undead zombie army when a dragon can set them on fire from the sky? So anyway, realizing they could not win on the field they use there powers (or perhaps the Great Other) to cause a cause a cataclysmic event at the fourteen fires to cast down Valaryia in a single stroke. From there they use agents in the South to sow dissent and weaken the enemy while ready themselves.

Really don't think so. Valyria is on the wrong continent for one, but I don't think the Others have that kind of intelligens.

The others being involved is a bit of a stretch. I've always been assuming it's a Tolkien-Dwarf-esque situation where they "delved too hungrily and too deep" into magic and ended up summoning or causing something that annihilates them all. That or a massive ass volcano.

I don't think the continent is too much of an issue, simply because the Others would not stop at Westeros, they would wipe out the world if they were not stopped and any race that has the power to ofset the balance of the seasons could potentially do much more. Also, the white walkers may not be that intelligent (although they seem to retain some memories of there previous lives), there masters, the Others, i would say have a very high level of intelligence.

I think it would be widely known if the others did it. Didn't the doom happen like a century before the conquest?

I think it has more to do with the name of the series (you guys do remember that it´s called "A Song Ice and Fire", right?). There have been some references to what the "song" is, but so far it remains unclear. However, I assumed that it had a lot to do with the Doom. Valyria was destroyed by "fire", and now Westeros will get attacked by "ice".

Valyria got destroyed by massive simultaneous volcanic eruptions (= fire), it is known.

So, considering that the Others uses "cold magic", and that they live literally on the other side of the world (pun not intended), it's unlikely they had something to do with the Doom.

Tyrion recalls that it was written that on the day of Doom every hill for 500 miles had split asunder to fill the air with ash and smoke and fire, blazes so hot and hungry that even dragons in the sky were engulfed and consumed. Great rents had opened in the earth, swallowing palaces, temples, entire towns. Lakes boiled or turned to acid, mountains burst, fiery fountains spewed molten rock a thousand feet into the air, red clouds rained down dragonglass and the black blood of demons, and to the north the ground splintered and collapsed and fell in on itself and an angry sea came rushing in.
To me this strongly indicates a super volcano eruption.

Ralf the Limper also noted when passing the ruins of Valyria that it smelt of brimstone (sulfur) and ash. Both of these are common when a volcano erupts.

Well if the others had anything to do with it. Wy just take valyria wich is litterarly on the other side of the world and wy then let the Targaryens run. I mean if they could destroy valyria why let the Targaryens stay on Dragonstone. And everything seems to point out the doom had something to do with fire and blood.

Allegedly the first Faceless Men had something to do with the Doom. I can't seem to find the chapter on the internet in which The Kindly Man says so, but he says the first Faceless Man was a slave in the Freehold, and saw all the slaves praying to their Gods of Death.. and he realised they were simply praying to the same God, with a different face each time.

Allegedly he swore to bring down the freehold...something everyone seems to be forgetting.

Bit off topic, but does anyone else think that the valyrian freehold is based on the Persian Empire and that the Ghiscari Empire is based on Greece?

I haven't thought about Valyrian Freehold but I always thought about the Ghiscari Empire as ancient Egypt-like empire - pyraminds and slaves.

I assure you no one is forgetting. The book merely states that the Faceless Man boughtdown the Valyrians, not the manner in which he did it.

I've always fond this image fascinating:

Mainly because in the most north-west corner (The North of Westeros) we can see an other, while at the other corner of the world there's a dragon/demon thing. I've always thought that when Mel says there's a constant battle between good/bad, (ice/fire, Lord of Light/The Great Other) and how everyone else is caught in-between the battle, that this image represents it perfectly.

It seems closer to Carthage and Rome.

Maybe true but when I read "pyramids" I pictured an Egypt like scenery.

I know that many other cultures had pyramids but Egypt seemed the closest thing for me ;p

Well the Doom does have some sort of Magical quality associated with it since no one ever returns from it and there are widespread rumors of Daemons that haunt the ruins of Old Valyria
