Select description of Agrianian Assault Infrantry from EB:
From the Greek Culture Pack:The Agrianians are an Illyrian tribe that has many Thracian influences. The Agrianians are famed for their acrobatics and climbing ability, and are well known as an exceedingly fierce tribe. They wear little in the way of armor, wearing only a small round bronze breastplate that doubles as a bowl and leather greaves that protect their legs from the jagged rocks. They carry daggers and axes, both modified to use as climbing tools. Their daggers are particularly long and specially shaped to make them both climbing spikes and excellent melee weapons.
Now Agrianian peltasts are pretty common knowledge, having famously served with Alexander the Great in his campaign. But the axe thing s pretty unique, even more so combined with 'axes used for climbing for assault' aspect. There isn't much in the historical record to explicitly suggest this, in the words of member paullusAgrianian Axemen – [Unique to Epirus and Macedon]
The Paeonian tribe of Agrianes are fierce fighters. As well as terrible killing tools, their axes are also climbing hooks for rough terrain. No sensible general would not use them in an assault.(from http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showth...sault-Infantry)Well, the Agrianikoi were a unit that required a fair bit of reconstruction... They were renowned for the skill with javelins, but their heavier weapons (the axe and pectoral) come from archaeological finds, inferences based on the actions in which some of the Agrianes participated in Alexander's campaigns, assaulting the Kilikian gates with the Hypaspistai, storming mountain fortifications in the Hindu Kush and along the Indus.
That is to say, from the historical record its not immediately inferable from any kind of cursory research that the Agrianians had axes used for climbing and were specifically used for assault roles. It seems to me fairly unlikely that CA and the EB team did parallel research to end up with this exact same unit based on very scant historical evidence. Rather, it seems like the unit was pretty much lifted from EB and put into RTW II. I am just an enthusiastic fan of EB and am not affiliated with the EB team in any way, but to me it seems like a shame if this is the case and the the countless years of research and work poured into EB (as evidenced by such an obscure unit that people actually put effort into researching) is used in RTW II without being credited. Any influence EB has on the game in my book is a victory in itself, but this just seems lazy to me. Any thoughts?
