Default New idea for designers - ancient statues were painted

Ancient statues were painted. It was a custom practiced in Greek and Roman art. I write this because I see the screenshots unpainted statues. Just until today to paint washed off. You can do some unpainted statues, some painted. Following are examples.

It is a well-known statue of Augustus. Do you recognize it?

    Julius Caesar:

    Emperor Marcus Aurelius:

    Some Greeks:

    Statue of Zeus at Olympia:

This image, taken by me in the British Museum:

    Very garish.

They look better unpainted IMO. Gives them a more timeless look.

As if the trained historians at CA didn't know this and leave it out for aesthetic reasons

Capitalization on the common perception of the player demographic and thus representing a 'authentic' look is more important than the apparent historicity in my opinion.

The unpainted statues completely lack any facial emotion.

Yeah, KLA I admire your knowledge about this kind of stuff but the way you constantly pretend like anybody not you (like the people at CA) have no knowledge at all is really obnoxious.

On topic, totally agree with Sharp. I'd rather have them unpainted, I know it's wrong but that image is so fixed in my head it somehow seems wrong to see the statues like that.

I must say that I too prefer the look of unpainted ones, but It would be nice to have more variety, so some of them could be painted and some could be as they are now.

Btw. it seems like one cannot suggest anything regarding historical correctness because people will outright call him rude or something along the lines.
Especially KLA seems to be a target of such a behavior. It makes you think...

Well, I will disagree with the general consensus here. I would prefer historical accuracy this time. Painted statues would give a huge feeling of time traveling to the past, when piramids were flawless, mosaics were colourful and statues were painted. I know leaving them unpainted capitalizes the common perception and looks right to more people, but it would be breaking some inmersion, watching the very same barely changed statues.

Were the pyramids still coated with limestone during the Ptolemaic period? If so that would be a cool sight during a battle.

It should be. I found this:

"Such were the incredible stories of this particular treasure that, in 820AD, the Arab Caliph Abdullah Al Manum, decided that check it out and put his men to work. They tunnelled into the pyramid from the side and were soon lost in the maze of interior passageways and chambers but were not deterred in the slightest. Digging and tunnelling away for weeks, possibly months on the end, they eventually found, to their jubilation, the Pharaoh’s burial chamber and the sarcophagus that he had been buried in but their celebration soon changed to shock as the huge, granite sarcophagus was minus its lid and the chamber itself was completely empty!
Absolutely furious that someone, no one knows who, had beaten him to the treasure and taken every single piece of it away, Caliph Abdullah Al Manum, ordered that the beautiful pyramid be completely stripped of its outer covering of polished white limestone and this gorgeous material be transported to Cairo to be used in construction work. He even ordered his men to knock down the Great Pyramid of Giza itself but had to concede defeat after removing just 30 feet from the top of this awesome building."

I prefer unpainted too, but can't help but to wonder:

if they were painted would the OP be saying the paint shcemes were wrong and 'conjectural' and then offer up the photos of museum replicas seen here?

many statues were built with 2 or 3 marbles with different colors to give a colorful effect: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._di_Napoli.JPG

They were painted. It doesn't really matter what you think looks better. Statues served a very particular purpose for the people of antiquity, namely to be lifelike representations of people, gods, or events.

I just gave a hint and idea.

They can still do 70% unpainted statues and 30% painted to the climate historical era.

Good interesting point. The thing is how were they painted in antiquity? I guess those images are artistical recreations but not exactly how they were painted. So unpainted or painted in an artistical recreation is not fully historically correct let's say for the Parthenon if it is in the game.
