    Default Rome 2 Campaign Series

Dan Carlin http://www.dancarlin.com/ and Greg Aldrete http://www.thegreatcourses.com/tgc/p...l.aspx?pid=422 are making a pilot with me for a Creative Assembly or YouTube Rome 2 campaign series.

The plan right now is to have 2-3 elite gamers, playing as Roman factions, take over the world. The players would summarize their activities every few turns with spliced in overlayed gameplay highlights. The historians would seep you in the Roman times, chronicle the complex social, political, religious, etc... phenomena permeating the rich world, and narrate/commentate their opinions on how the warlords are faring. A battle or two and a historical discussion would also be thrown in to every ~75 minute episode based on what the audience is interested in seeing.

Is this something you would watch?

Please provide your thoughts on what aspects you would be interested in. Something purely about history? The gamers playing on a high Very Hard or Legendary difficulty mode to appreciate the tactical finesse like an eSport? A mix of the two?

I would be interested in watching this would be quite immersive. Personally I don't care much about esports. A lot of people who stream TW games end up streaming it with little care to the setting and only about the gameplay, or showing how good they are with the gameplay. I'd love to see difficulty, but not for the sake of proving skill more so to make the situations dire. I enjoy reading AARs a lot from TW games that are kind of roleplay-ish and campaigns that do not try to replicate history. Go with the flow of the campaign and make your own history! Would love to see that.

Hahaha I have a similiar series comming out for Empire total war, its my signature Lets Play Poland Lithuania MACHINIMA, basically the same thing, a narration on whats going on with the fight being machinima. Well kinda the same thing. I will also be doing the second series on Rome 2, with the story being about Sparta.

If you're going to have actual historians on the show, I would focus more on history and less on the gameplay, and use the gameplay as a springboard to talk about real historical stuff. Because if you're going to focus on the skill or esports aspect of it... what are the historians going to talk about?

This is something I would really be interested in watching - when I'm not actually playing of course! Fantastic idea though. Lets just hope the combat and battles are not too "arcadey" and have real depth to them.

For me, whilst I like the idea, it would very much depend on how it was done. It would depend on the pace & detail.

Note: The plan right now is not to reenact history, but to merge a high-level campaign and rich setting narration. It would be like watching a normal campaign with elite players playing to win, but speeded up to the highlights, and instead of pausing to read the description boxes, you have some of the era's foremost historians providing mini-lectures on what they think is the most interesting and relevant stuff.

This is subject to change though.

That was gonna be my reply question, I would watch no doubt, but if your reenacting history I guess the set up would be real players vs real players cause the AI may not follow the reenactment. So when you said the players would be roman factions taking over the world, I was wondering how the AI will do what you want to follow history?

@McCarronXLD How would you like to see roleplay represented?

@Sun Jetzu Nice video, excited to watch!

@BobTheShogun How would you reconcile real history from alternative history via gameplay?

@Steel*Faith How would you suggest making them non-arcadey?

The pace is approximately 9-15 game turns/episode (~75 minutes).

    2 minutes opener/closer
27 minutes player campaign (each player covering 3-5 turns in three cycles)
15 minutes historical commentary at interesting points (for ex: if a historian wants to chime in on the Roman legionnaires during recruitment)
    23 minutes of 1-2 battles
8 minutes historical or gameplay end-of-show discussion

@Ballacraine Is that the sort of pacing info you meant? The campaign, battles, and commentary would be segmented and shuffled in together.

Kind of like Sun Jetzu's machinima Either like a movie set during the time and following armies/characters in battle while also detailing your campaign experience from like a leader's journal. I would also be interested in something that plays a lot like a historical documentary, but is of your alternate history campaign rather than trying to replicate historical events.

Here is a great example of what I would like to see. It has the opportunity for "historian" commentary, overall narrative, quotes from people of the time, and lots of machinima possibility. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB732...46KT9KW3lLyIGA Would love to see alternate histories and factions through this type of media.

Is the plan to only focus on Rome? I would personally love to see some episodes with the other factions, like Carthage and Egypt and Parthia, etc. Otherwise, great idea.
