About me: Long time reader. Played every total war game and expansion. Preordered Rome 2 total war, will buy every dlc immediately.

Did you guys notice the lame voice overs in the recent gameplay video? I hate how the troops say "Melee Infantry" instead of "Legionary First Cohort" or "Auxilia".
Not to mention even lamer shout outs by the soldiers such as "They are trying to kill me!"

Remember Rome 1's music and sound design? Pretty amazing for its time. I want the same from Rome 2! No more "Shamefru display!"

Looks like CA is just being lazy with the sound design!

After reading the title first, i though this thread is abot something like: After all the Gunpowder Eras CA wants to let my Soldiers fight in Melee!

Actually that is just an individual statement by the NPC character Tribune Obviousus who is commanding that cohort.

Can think of few battles where that would not be an accurate statement though...

It was this way in FotS aswell. Units didn't always say "Imperial infantry" or "Imperial Guard", sometimes they said "Ready sir!" or just "Line infantry" (they are technically Line infantry but they aren't the unit ​Line infantry)

I don't think it's a case of being 'lazy' and I really hate how often I've seen that word tossed in CAs direction. I don't like the 'melee infantry' stuff either and would much prefer (and hope) that unit names are also included. But maybe this is a design choice they've adopted, like the whole 'shield bearer' fiasco. It doesn't make them 'lazy' just because we disagree with their approach. I doubt having a VA shout 'auxilla!' would take anymore work so it's not a case of cutting corners.

I tend to agree with the OP.
It is better if infantry respond with their unit type rather than a totally generic troop description.

I want something in the spirit of Rome I.
Not only did troops sound right, but the music was spot on & atmospheric.
I really hope JVD has a whole lot more input than just the introductory trailer score!

Whilst Med 2 & Shogun 2 did benefit from a somewhat tongue in cheek voiceovers, I can't see that approach sitting well in this classical era.
Everybody was far too stern & serious minded for that sort of thing.

You saw pre-alpha footage. I will be very surprised if they have already completed final voice recording sessions.

I hate how this is everyone's first excuse.

Know what else was pre-alpha footage? A naval battle in Empire with a coastal battle, and when grape shot was used there was even blood from the crew.

Guess what wasn't in Empire?

Funniest things were in RTW how barbarian warbands referred to themselves as "Barbarian Warband", that just seemed highly unlikely. They should compensate in R2TW by having legionary cohorts say "Fascist Cohorts".

Most units have different responses to being selected and maybe "melee infantry" was one of them. While "they're trying to kill me" is a bit weird to hear on a battlefield, there were many other voice overs that were quite good. Like "What can we do against such hate?" -> "Hate back, son, hate back."(LOTR reference) and "Aaah! My face!" -> "Shut up!" Lol

I think I did hear "they are trying to kill me!" when I watched the trailer and laughed pretty hard. I mean, really? Why would they even record that line in the studio?

Hopefully it will be more fleshed out on release. And that ghastly line must be removed, of course they're trying to kill you. It's a battle! not a pillow-fight!
