Default Can we take control of a general unit?

I have been out of the Total War loop since Empire (didn't care for it much, and didn't want Shogun) but I heard that in Shogun you could take control of hero units or something to that effect?

And if I'm not mistaken, there have been hints that this ability will exist in RTW2? Has this been confirmed yet?

You could make your general into a complete machine in Shogun 2 - it was great.

You could take control of artillery in Fall of the Samurai. In this game it might be the same. What you're referring to I think is the camera very close behind a unit.

You mean like how you can take command of your general unit in Kingdoms Under Fire?

    No, you can't do that.
And even if you could, it would be impractical, because:
    1. One man won't make much of a difference. His presence may boost morale if he is a general or important individual, but purely combat-wise, he won't disrupt the enemy much. Don't believe the Spartacus serie.
    2. More often than not, you will not have time to control your general in person; because the battle changes so fast, and will require your constant attention from the sky-view.

Ah, darn. I didn't think controlling a unit would make much difference, but I thought it might be fun to take a more active role in battles that are pretty much just routine victories. Though that would take coding a whole combat system.

Maybe simply the ability to control the general unit: WASD to move it around, hotkeys for Rally/inspire, hold down some button to charge etc...
