New Windows 8 computer unspecified error

I just got a brand new computer with windows 8 and bought medieval 2 total war Gold Edition, the install went ok but when I tried to play the game I got black screen and it said unspecified error and exited. I've tried to get it to work but no cigar, I uninstalled and tried again same problem. I even called the geek squad and they said its impossible can anybody help any help at all would be great.

I put it on the desktop but it still said unspecified error and shut down what should I do?

Did you run the setup.exe that came with it after you unpacked it?

I cant find setup.exe anywhere and when I extracted the patch to the desktop it was already unpacked what the hell is happening!

Hi sorry It took me so long to reply to you I had some stuff going on anyways. I'll be totally honest this is the first computer I've ever had and I don't know that much about anything with computers will you still help me and if you will then I have a couple of questions 1. how do I post a pic of a file or anything really or can you only do that to a file? 2. how do I unpack and pack a file? 3.where should setup.exe be in the patch file? All I found was a bunch of setup's, I checked all of them and they all didn't have any setup.exe anywhere I did find a file that said it updated medieval 2 from the 1.4 version to the 1.5 version I dowloaded it and try'ed to play the game but it still didn't work the file was called setup application. what should I do and sorry if some of that didn't really make any sense.

The free copy of http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm does a great job of unpacking. To your desktop is best.
When it's unpacked, open the folder it made and click on the setup.exe inside it.

I picked the winrar 86x 5.00 beta and after I downloaded it I tried to open it but something pop'ed up and said windows smartscreen prevented a unrecognized app from opening what should I do?
