Every other day, Longstreet would meet with the commanding officers of the various formations under his command, down to the regimental level, in order to stay up to date with the Brigade's training and maintain a healthy relationship with his officers. Most meetings were fairly uneventful, filled with long, draining reports of ammunition requisition or discussion of various enlistment regulations. However, this afternoon it would be different. As the sun dipped lower in the sky and a relaxed, almost sleepy atmosphere settled over the 2nd Corps, Longstreet stood before the assembled crowd of southerners and began to speak in a big, booming voice.
"Men, your prayers are answered! Just this morning I received the order from General Lee. Tomorrow, I want you all to get your supplies packed up and your boys ready to march. We are bound for Manasses Junction, Virginia, to the north. As many of you know, it is an important railroad junction that, if taken, would make the job of supplying the Union army, a foreign army, an army of invaders despoiling the sacred soil of our sweet Virginia, much harder. Furthermore, the town's location is naturally suited to defense. The Yankees will walk right into our bullets. Any questions?"
